Never really a true superstar, but he was great for a long time, and to have such a long career speaks volumes. The fact that he was able to revive his career the way he did is remarkable. Most players who fall off like he did in the mid 2010s don't come back.

He'd probably have to take a significant pay cut from his current $4M salary to return next season, and would be playing in a significantly reduced role (4th line/healthy scratch). He's already reached the promised land, so I'm sure he wants to retire with some dignity after one more shot in the postseason.

For many guys, the money is kinda meaningless if they stay and play for another year or two. And I'm sure he will miss being with the guys and the games themselves. But it's often the travel and the training that becomes "work" and just not worth it. Never mind the maybe family commitments.

I remember what Raider coach John Madden as giving the reason why he retired from coaching......Tongue in cheek of course.

John's wife asked him to drive his son to the California Bureau of Transportation so their son could get his driving license. John said " What!!!!! The boy's only ten years old!!!" Of course his son was sixteen years old but John had realized that coaching was all time consuming and life was passing him by.
