Description
LA has some interesting decisions as they have a logjam of prospects. As such they should use some of their future capital to get better now. OS Norris would secure for the long term a C to take over from Kopitar and using PHI being dumb to get better on the wings

Don't worry about trade value or whatnot I just threw it together, and yes I am aware that OS aren't real but it totally makes sense for a team in LAs position to do though.

It is absolutely an awful problem to have. Why don't you look up how many times a team with even one 8-figure contract has won a Stanley Cup.

Go ahead, I'll wait.

Buddy. The cap has been going up. 8 figure contracts have only really started to exist recently. Convenient how you ignored that.

Those 8 figure contracts today are the same cap hit % as many players who have won the cup in the past, again interesting how you ignored that.

I really hope you didn't wait when your argument was that **** bud

Leafs need cap space...How about taking 7m Nylander for two years in a trade.

By the way, IMO there is excellent chance that Matthews signs as UFA with the Kings in the summer of 2024...when Kopitar deal expires.

For what, 16M for 5 years? No thanks. We wouldn't be able to afford him anyway. He can go to Arizona where he can have 1/2 of their cap.

Personally I don't see Matthews wanting to go to Arizona. IMO he wants to go to a big US market. Yea 16m when the cap is 82m is lot for any team to pay. But what other teams besides Phoenix has that cap? No, I still think LA are front contenders for Matthews.

Which is why it's ok for a team to have 1 or even maybe 2 of them. Having 3 of them guarantees your team is going to be top heavy, have depth problems, and will be in salary cap hell for the foreseeable future. Toronto is the petri dish for the top-heavy experiment. Let's see how it goes. So far it hasn't worked out so well for them.

Curious about this

Kopitar turns 35 y/o soon, 2 years left.

Is it because of Byfield and Turcotte? Kupari? Danault?

Maybe it would work, but it would depend on how much he'd want along with the extensions of Byfiled, Kaliyev, and Clarke.

Kopitar will be a servicable 2C for at least another 2 years after his contract expires. If he's not, there's plenty of cheaper 2C options

See this is a great way to show you have bo idea what you're talking about. The leafs have one of the deepest teams in the league. The 3rd line in particular is fantastic. We have no one important to sign in the near future and we have the space to do what we need to.

Anyway thanks for proving your opinion is uninformed and worthless. Saves me the time going forward

No, believing that the Leafs can fill their holes including goalie next season without trading Nylander is kinda just wishful thinking. Admitting the Leafs might try to go with their current big four, but that doesn't necessarily make it a correct decision
And to believe Matthew can't/won't sign elsewhere as UFA, defies all logic. Unrestricted Free Agent...has meaning.

UFA movement in the nhl is rare and requires exceptional circumstances. There is no reason to believe it will happen to Matthews outside of hate, stupidity, or wishful thinking. None of the required circumstances are present at all. The chance that he leaves literally isn't worth worrying about because the Leafs are such overwhelming favourites to keep him.

And the leafs don't really have holes. The d core is mostly set subject to some tweaking that won't cost much $$ wise. As I told you awhile ago Lily is HERE and is cheap. I shouldnt need to mention Sandin at this point either. The forward core is just minor stuff with RFAs and a host of NHL ready guys who are being held down due to our immense depth. Goaltending is really the only part that needs work and we have plenty of money to do it with. Everyone always overestimated the difficulty it will be for Toronto to do everything and they keep having it proven wrong every time. Remember Ritchie? That was a month ago lmao. We got positive (or more accurately neutral) value out of him.

I'm sorry Palhal but you do not seem in the slightest bit to be able to accurately assess the state of the Maple Leafs.
Hell maybe they do move willy. There were (very) minor rumours that haven't been substantiated about it, but we have no need to for cap purposes.

The leafs are fine and it's time people realised it. Most of the league is in considerably worse shape cap wise or have more/more significant holes to fill.
Or both.

Cap rises 1m. Reilly is getting a 2.5m raise, Sandin and Liljegren get raises. RFA Engvall gets a raise . Since you think UFA is rare movement , a suppose Mikheyev and Lybushin is gets a raise too and remain Leafs
Campbell at his current 1.6 gets a raise since you don't think UFAs don't move to the other teams....(or at least his replacement will)

Yeah, I don't understand your math.

The Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs have the same amount of playoff series wins in the last decade, and Buffalo has made the playoffs in exactly none of those years.

Like I said, we'll see how it goes, but so far it is a failed experiment.
