Dallas gets a winger to help on the fringes for just some distant picks where missing the playoffs isn't a heartbreaker, while keeping AJ for another season.

Boston actually moves out $1.85m in buried cap hits and only gets a cap hit of $2.25 for Subban, so allows them to still make a different move. Not to mention that same $1.85 would carry into next year if the Devils bury them, but totals to an actual salary of $3.25m. Devils are essentially buying a 2nd rounder here while helping Boston short and longer term. Buyouts for BOS for the players combined would be around $1.9m combined (something the Devils would be better off doing as cap won't be a problem).

Yzerman gets a late pick for his expiring AHL goalie on a team on the bubble for the playoffs, but the Devils need an actual backup to finish the year.

For EDM, they get Zacha as cheap middle 6 scoring depth (he would be 6th in scoring on EDM) that they can still resign next year along with a 4th liner that can help on PK and depth scoring. All that said, EDM actually cuts salary with this trade.

For the Devils, they can see how some of the guys leading Utica can step into middle 6 next year with fewer players that aren't part of the future. 2023 draft is meant to be a lot deeper than 2022, so it's all about patience.
