Habs reject. Vlasic’s contract is a terrible boat anchor and it’s gonna take way more than that to dump it. It cost the leafs an unprotected first to dump 1 year of patty marleau’s $6 mil contract for Carolina to buy out, what do you thinks it’s gonna cost to dump 4 years of a contract that pays $7 mil a year? 2023 first unprotected at the very least

Let me update. I'll include having SJ take Weber's contract too.

Weber’s on LTIR and isn’t affecting the habs cap situation though

It doesn't, but it's been heavily rumored that MTL's trying to find a trade for a team to take on his contract, which, to me, is somewhat surprising since competitive or not, MTL is a sellout every night kind of team, but hey, that's the word that's been going around for a good while now. And it'd be pocket change for Hasso Plattner if it means being the difference to making his SJ team competitive (and thus financially a plus for him instead of a minus) again.

Still doesn’t lessen the burden Vlasic’s contract is to the Habs. Still gonna need way more value to convince them to take on that contract. Again, start with unprotected 2023 first

The difference is that Shea Weber is also on a terrible contract that costs real money for years

Edit: I think you made that comment before he added Weber

Money isn’t an issue for Geoff Moulson though, and Weber only costs about $6 mil in real dollars since he’s on LTIR - most is paid by insurance. Again, Weber on ltir doesn’t affect Montreal’s cap space, vlasic does.

Ok. But an unprotected 1st plus taking on Weber should be enough IMO, especially given that Vlasic's at least not terrible and can still play on the bottom pairing (he should be signed for 1.5-2mil, the contract is the main grievance).

You know I agree with you. That's why I was really surprised when I heard MTL's looking to move Weber. And it wasn't the offhanded rumor, it was from multiple reputable sources.

No it doesnt effect the cap space, it effects the value of assets in return/given. Real money does factor into things like this, as much money as some teams have

Looking closer, I thought Vlasics contract ended sooner, youre right in this case, its pretty much a wash

The Montreal trade is awful. Montreal isn't looking to move it, the rumour is that a few teams are looking to acquire it. He only has 6 million in real money for the rest of his contract and can be put on LTIR whenever, so he wouldn't count against the cap. So he's not really a negative asset. Vlasic has 4 years at 7 million left. To get rid of that would be like an A prospect, an unprotected first and prob a roster player.

Maybe I misinterpreted it wrong. Maybe you did. I don't know but from what I understand, the only reason the Habs will move Weber is to make the team's capologists (John Sedgewick) job easier. There is no negative effect to keeping Weber for the Habs other than they have to deal with LTIR and all that BS which unless you are doing the "Kucherov" for the playoffs, is kind of pointless extra work.

There is more incentive for other teams to acquire Weber than there is for the Habs to get rid of Weber. Now its not a crazy benefit but there is a benefit and thus Weber has some value to other teams. Taking him on doesn't really help the habs all that much. It probably makes more sense for the Habs to keep Weber, buyout Vlasic and use Weber to go above the cap ceiling with LTIR than it does to trade him to SJ in this scenario.

Either way though, Vlasic is probably the least valuable asset in the league right now. More so than Price IMHO. Mainly because he doesn't get injured enough for a team to at least use him on LTIR. At least when Price is playing in the playoffs, he's winning games for the Habs. When he's hurt, he's on LTIR so we get cap benefit. Vlasic can't really make the team better right now and doesn't have enough injuries to keep him out of the lineup for long periods of time which IMO is the worst combination for a player to have.

Long story short, just buy out Vlasic. Its either that or play him and hope he rebounds his career.
