Description

Pierre Dorion comes out and says that this team needs to compete for a playoff spot in the 2022-2023 in a media availability on March 11th, 2022. Here a roster similar to one PD must construct to make it happen. Ottawa could sign more players on one-year contracts if they wanted to make this team better, but not for the long term, as they need to sign their young players (i.e Tim Stuetzle, Jake Sanderson, etc.)

If anything else needs to get done with this roster, it is adding better veteran defencemen. I am relying too much on the addition of Jake Sanderson and the development of Jacob Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thomson to make the defense better. Erik Brannstrom is now not needed and therefore traded.

If the goaltending doesn't work out, we will be relying on Mads Sogaard to step in a play as he has in the AHL. Troy Mann, coach of the Bellville Senators, has had some high praise for the netminder so I have some trust he will work out at the NHL level.

Decision Notes:
-Nikita Zaitsev is bought out
-Olofsson Signed to bridge deal that walks him to free agency ("show me" contract)
-Andrew Copp overpaid (IMO) to come to Ottawa as a UFA
-Anton Forsberg is not brought back, Filip Gustavsson is on a one-way contract and Matt Murray has been good when he's not hurt :/
-Nick Paul wants too much money, so he is unfortunately not brought back
-MDZ traded to Arizona for a bag of pucks (hopefully a 6th gets it done)
-Ridly Greig and Parker Kelly are in and out of the lineup as seen fit

You just signed 2 3rd line guys to play 2nd line roles. Best case scenario, acquire a Fiala or Konecny for the 2nd line , then move Pinto to 2RW and play White as 3C. Now don’t play Thomson on his off side. Only have one of JBD or Thomson on the team

-Brannstrom could possibly be enough to get us to pass on needing the 1st…. EXCEPT…. he’s a LH shot defenseman, and we are LOADED on that side
Dahlin & Owen Power are locked in as LD1 & LD2
Then we have Samuelsson & Bryson, who have looked like they belong in the NHL, and also Ryan Johnson (former 1st round pick) looking good & coming

We NEED a RH defenseman, not a LH guy

When a bottom team drafts it is always wise to chose the best player available.
So one needs to question why Buffalo is in this predicament because they drafted Power when they had Dahlin, Samuelsson and Johnson in the pipeline.
I would accept this trade then look to flip Brännström in a trade for a young RHD.
IMO this is a good return for Olofsson, even if it does not include a RHD.

Brannstrom is better on the right side, him and Samuelsson might make an outstanding pair.

It's a decent return actually, but I would decline. If it was a 2022 2nd I would accept.

Please read my entire post.
You picked out one part of a sentence (Buffalo is in this predicament) without understanding the entire context.
Reread my first sentence as Buffalo took the BPA, I was not being critical, merely making an observation why a bottom team gets as much talent as possible.
This trade which includes Brännström would return the BPA for Olofsson.
But to your question Beniers was a very good option.
Buffalo needed Centers at the time of draft as Krebs was a Kraken and Thompson was a RW.

Please tell me what does "this predicament" have to do with my comment about Buffalo accepting the trade?
But to answer your second post the "predicament" right now is having 4 NHL LHD (see above) in the pipe line and only 2 RHD (Jokiharju and Laaksonen).

Circling back to my original comment, I would make the trade as Buffalo would be getting a pick and a good prospect for Olofsson.
If needed those chips or others, could be used to obtain a RHD.

Let me close this is a very disappointing discussion TBH.
I have given many of your posts likes even if I do not agree with every word because the essence of your post was valid.
If you disagree with my premise that the trade is fair and Buffalo should do it fine, and I can accept and move on.
But to carry on over one part (one word) of sentence!
That, I do not understand.

I was just asking if there was another player available that was better than Power. I haven't followed the rookies very much this year, obviously I've followed power but that's about all. I wanted Beniers before the draft, but there isn't anything I can do about that now.

To muddy the picture, U of M GK is Erik Portillo, drafted by Buffalo 67th in 2019.
Is he any good a just a GK on a good team

So are these guys really good.
Or are they hanging on each other's coattails as Dylan Strome (McDavid's team mate in Erie) did when he was taken 3rd OA behind McDavid and Eichel.

Yea, wasnt Debrincat was also part of that coattails if I remember correctly? He turned out alright. Yea the sabres goaltending prospect pool is also a little overloaded, just like LD with Portillo, UPL, and Levi all going to be trying for spots...

Yes DeBrincat played with Strome and McDavid in the 2014-15 season.
He led the Otters with 51 goals that year.
Of the three, Strome is the only disappointment.

Let me add, the 2016 draft was one of Tim Murray's magic moments.
He took Nylander over Sergachev, then traded the 38th and 89th pick to move up in the draft to take Aspland 33rd OA.
DeBrincat was taken with the 39th pick. Perfect example of Murray's ability to judge talent.
Imagine if Buffalo had Sergachev and DeBrincat!
