As far as their cap is concerned, I'm not sure only because I don't who they're keeping and/or re-signing. It would be a $2M increase for one year and then they'd be free, whereas with Kassian he's got two more years.

I get it, you drop an extra year of the contract, but they've only got like $10 mil free next year, with Poolparty, and a few other to sign, including a goalie if they're not running Smith...Unless they can get out of the Barrie contract, they really can't afford to take something like that on right now, IMO. I went back and forth on it. Kassian brings an element Burke and Hexy want, but his offense has dried up. Moving Zucker is just complicated and we have our hands tied because Hex refuses to add incentives for teams to take players.

Smith is a bottom-six player. I'm sure his production ceiling is higher than it is now, but he's a good 3rd liner at best. I like him for the Pens because of the physical element.

Personally I'd just buy him out and free up the $3M, but I don't think Hextall will consider that. I also don't think the should have to add sweetener to move Zucker for only one year of his contract, but I'd fine to add a mid-level prospect or mid-round pick, or even retain $2M.

The answer to those questions will inform you why Detroit (or anyone else) won't offer more than a 3rd for Pettersson. PIT doesn't have the option of saying no and keep him, they have to get rid of cap and is therefore forced to accept "whatever they can get".
