Description
Detroit is sells off a couple of pending UFAs, while adding a top 100 pick and effectively replacing Namestnikov with Compher who is signed for another year. Compher was the captain at University of Michigan (not that it really matters now).

Colorado brings back a familiar player in Namestnikov who, in my opinion, plays Swiss Army role better than Compher. They also add a solid depth defenseman who matches their style. Most importantly, they gain cap space which can be used elsewhere, while adding to their roster.

I think thats a very bad deal for the Avs, giving up too much and not really improving. Namestnikov is very blah, weak on the puck, he really disappeared in the playoffs.

Stretcher is meh too. I dont think giving up a 2nd with serviceable player in Compher really helps out the avs. Burning a high draft pick to min max your roster

Detroit's not retaining on two cheap contracts, Dan Rosen of NHL.Com pretty much said that Detroit will be dealing Greiss before the TDL so he's one retention and Leddy will will be the other one since both have the most expensive contracts on the team. So Yzerman will retain on both Greiss and Leddy and that's it as they're already retaining on Panik for the next 2 years.

Not a fan. Don’t think Namestikov is an upgrade over Compher especially in the playoffs where love him or hate him Jim Tim the ginger has a knack for agitation. Namestikov is kind of meh in the physical department. Stetcher I think there are better options out there.

I'd retain on 1 but not both, we need some flexibility.

Fair points. Here’s my thought process with this general concept - Colorado is able to buy themselves cap space while adding to their team.
Namestnikov for Compher is essentially a swap. Similar role, similar usage, similar production. They’re different styles of player. I thought Namestnikov was fine in his short time with Colorado two years ago. 4 goals in 12 playoffs games is solid for his role. I also thought he played up the lineup when called upon better than Compher has been able to. I understand he can be soft on the puck. I appreciate Compher’s ability to be an agitator, but I think his perceived physicality within the flow of the game is overrated. Namestnikov is actually at 2.4 hits/60 while Compher is at 2.1 this season.
I’m also a fan of Stecher’s game. Even if Byram comes back, I don’t think they have enough depth on defense to get through 4 rounds of the playoffs. There are inevitably going to be injuries, especially considering the injury history of all their current defensemen. Stetcher just came back from injury (ironically), so he hasn’t played a lot this year. But he’s been solid as a third pair guy for the duration of his career, and his skating ability fits Colorado’s style. He doesn’t really PK, so that’s a negative.
The second round pick plus a roster player is pricey. But, in my opinion, Colorado is adding to their team while also buying cap space to do more elsewhere.

Nice of you to elaborate so thoroughly, well done.

I wouldn't mind Namestnikov as a cheap depth add, but not at this price. If Avs need capspace they can trade Compher for a pick instead of using one of only two top 60 picks they have in the next two drafts.

A 2nd for Namestnikov works. Add another 2nd for retention on Stecher and taking Compher.
