Even if Bernier is healthy (which is uncertain), they absolutely cannot go into next year with the same goaltending tandem. They have plenty of cap space and outside of Bratt, no RFAs that require a significant raise, so there's no reason they shouldn't spend money.

They should be looking to acquire a goaltender, and either add a quality forward or defenseman.

Gaudreau certainly would be a logical choice. The other thing the Devils might be able to do is to fill some short term needs with trades from teams that need cap. For instance if Bernier 's career is over, the Devils would be looking at a goalie. Maybe the Devils would take 3.875m Mrzarek (for very cheap) from the Leafs, if the Leafs want to spend their tight cap on UFA Campbell.
But lots of teams are cap strapped, I like the Devil's hopes of landing good players at good value.

If they aren't within a couple mil of the cap next season, it'll be the owner's doing, not Fitz's.

Devils should take steps forward as a team before trying to make another big splash in free agency. It gets more teams into trouble than out of trouble...Don't overspend to just be relevant. Hamilton made sense as RHD are so rare on the market.

So much going wrong again just destroyed this season. Hughes and Hamilton out for stretches, Bernier going down very early, Blackwood being complete trash (left to argue if it is because of the bad ankle at all).

Give me an upgrade on coaching and see what Holtz and Mercer are full-time top 6.

If we can do ANYTHING, please bring in a shutdown RHD, would like to see Lyubushkin. Anyone that can help with penalty kill and support Ty Smith until he (hopefully) finds his game again.

Also would like a 3C to fill in the hole of Mercer going to wing, and be there in case a top 6 guy goes down AGAIN to injury. No idea who really stands out there.

This free agency has a lot of great top 9 forwards that I could see Devils target. Reilly Smith, Valeri Nichushkin, and Andre Burakovsky come to mind. Hertl, Gaudreau, and Forsberg if they want to go big name hunting.

For goalies, they could target Husso, Kuemper, or Campbell in free agency or trade for a goalie.

This definitely will not be the opening night roster.

All 3 goalies I can see them resigning with their own clubs. Out of those 5 forwards, the only 1 I can see coming and that's if we throw some money his way is Forsberg.

I guess we’ll have to see. But I highly doubt anyone could see Hamilton signing with the Devils halfway through last season yet here he is. Money talks, and the Devils have lots of it.

I just don’t see how someone could think that NJ will do nothing to improve this team from now to opening night of next season.
