the reason the isle are trading varlomov is to get rid of his cap.. hes not worth a first when the team is trying to get rid of him. The first is apart of the trad ebecause amyfield aswell, idk why islanders fans thinkk there backup goalie is worth a 1st. ur team stinks this year and is opening cap space to retool next LOLOLOL

The team isn't in a spot where it needs to move Varlamov, cap-wise. They've got 13 non-ELC forwards signed for next year with only Parise & Clutterbuck as UFA, and Bellows as an RFA. Dobson is an RFA but if his cap hit exceeds $4M I'd be surprised. If they keep Varlamov, they have at least $13M in cap space next season. Bellows can take over LW3 from Parise, and RW4 doesn't need to be a guy you spend more than $1.5M on. That should leave them $7-8M to get another LD and fill in the rest of the margins.

If they do move Varlamov, he gets move as a potential starter. Just because he and Sorokin are 1A/1B on the island means that he'd be that way elsewhere in the league. Edmonton is not trading for Varlamov to have him back up Mike friggin' Smith, so they're going to pay starter prices for a starting goalie.

Backup goalie LOLOLOLOL. Hes a top 15 goalie easy top 10 maybe. He happens to have ilya sorokin on his team. Calling varly a backup is like calling draisaitl a 2C. The islanders are happy with the top goalie tandem. Even in a terrible year they have the 2nd highest team sv%.
