Petry and Chara

Description
Petry is 100% an upgrade on the Leafs D. Half retained his contract doesn't look terrible. Montreal get alot of nice pieces to build off of, but they have the retention and Ritchie for this year and next. Montreal already has too many wingers with term. I assume they unload quite a few.

I understand Petry is not having a great year. But that entire team is. Let's be honest, he would be an upgrade over holl and at this cap hit, would be very reasonable.

Who says no?

Chara is just for added depth, experience, leadership. I understand he hasn't been great lately but I would rather him coming in as our 8th option rather than Biega and Dahlstrom. 5th to 3rd rounder. I am also aware he may not waive for Toronto.

Isles that that and run.

As for the Habs trade, I know everyone thinks they do the same... but you have not paid for that 10M in retention. They won't expect you to pay for all of it, but you gonna have to pay for some of it.

Well, I didn't see the retention part, without retention, petry is supposed to get a 1st and good prospect ( 1st and 2nd) , so the the team obviously has to add more, (amirov, der argechunstev), then Ritchie and dermott is for cap space, now that I realize, it's pretty fair.

Petry has positive value regardless of the naysayers. How much is debatable.
Nobody is trading for this year's Petry. They are trading for next year's Petry with the hope he is more like last year's Petry.
Less of a risk than people make it out to be.

Even if there were no market, he still has value to Montreal. They don't have the luxury of throwing him away.
There is no Canadian market for him period. The only reason a move is being considered, is to get him closer to family by reducing exposure to covid restrictions. Until restrictions are relaxed in Canada, only US destinations make sense.

Montreal must be very selective with their usage of retention. They should only retain on one long term contract at most, in order to maximize returns on assets sold at the deadline or leveraged through 3rd party retention.
Until Price's situation is resolved, he should be the only long term retention possibility. For everyone else, cap can be managed through contracts coming back in trades.

I kept Holl for a reason :P

Holl has been more effective than Petry this season. By a pretty wide margin. Weber made that Blueline so much better. I never gave him enough credit. That and price, and now without them, their whole defence can't handle it.

On the Leafs team Petry won't be the number 1 guy like he is on Montreal. He would be the number 4 guy. He would be perfectly slotted. With Sandin and Holl being the bottom pairing. Holl has been solid since Christmas. Petry + Holl is stronger than Holl + Lily.

Pierre Lebrun, Elliotte Friedman, Frank Seraveili.
NRD also mentioned Habs could make 1 for 1 for klingberg, meaning they have same value.

I dare you to post any link with any of them saying Petry is supposed to get a 1st and a good prospect.

And who is NRD? But quick tip: when an "insider" says "could" that is not reported info. It's them imagining a scenario (in other words, 99% of the time, utter BS).

You don't trade for a 34 year old with 3 more years of a big money contract when he looks like crap now. Is he declining? There is a good chance of it. Way too risky.

Popular narratives are mostly objectively and blantantly wrong. MTL would be hard pressed to retain that much for that long. But it is a good package and would be the type of package needed for them to do it. Very few right d options out there are actually upgrades for the Leafs and intrigue me. Petry half retained would be interesting Sticking Out Tongue. But HIGHLY unlikely.

And I would think Petry would waive for Toronto. Looking at the Leafs team, he would be going to a stanley cup contender. I am sure he wouldn't pass that opportunity.

Petry isnt upset with Montreal because they suck, his wife has been very vocal about mandates. Any Canadian team would be a non-starter for him and his family.

Otherwise, yeah he would be a great fit in Toronto. And I wouldn't mind at all retaining, as you have provided assets for that retention.

Haha that was my thought process when I decided to make this trade proposal. I Like Petry. I Don't like his contract. I Actually don't mind his contract with full rentention. Man that would cost a lot. Let's make a trade proposal to see what I think that would look like. I should now prepare for the wolves to eat my soul. **HIT SEND**

I didn't prepare well enough for that last part it appears. hahaha.

Paying someone to take Ritchie will be costly. Leaf fans dont wanna hear it, but this deal is pretty fair. But Petry has a 15 team NTC, and the other 6 Canadian teams are guaranteed to be on it. Good idea, but wont happen due to non hockey related reasons.

What do you think stats justifying trades is all about?

Until Petry is traded to another team, he can only be judged on what he has done in Montreal, and until this year, has improved every single year even into his 30s.

it hasn't been touched on much with the Petry talk here, but if Toronto wants to give up a 3 for Chara we can get him on the next plane out of LaGuardia

Petry had outplayed Weber the last two seasons. When Weber was injured, Petry was still great. Petry missing his partner, Edmundson, and having a 4th string goalie, and all the off ice issues, has taken its toll.

... typical.

Here, i'll provide my opinion since you couldn't break it down on your own.

Petry rumoured value = 1st round pick + Amirov

$3,125,000 x 4 years retention = Dermott (3-4RD) + Der-Arguchintsev + (some of Amirov's value)

Ritchie Cap Dump = 2nd round pick

Its a lot of pieces, but one of your pieces is a dead weight contract with negative value. Dermott and Der-Arguchintsev aren't valuable to any fan outside of Toronto. Leafs spent a 1st on Marleau's $6M for 1 year. You are getting Habs to eat $3.1M for 4 years.

This deal is closer than your homers want to admit, which is all useless because Petry would refuse to go to Toronto anyway. But yeah, we're the "clowns"

is petrys terrible season this year supposed to be ignored?

that rumoured value is farfetched especially at his current cap hit with no retention, and you wanna talk about homer? LOL

Dermott and Der-Arguchintsev aren't valuable to any fan outside of Toronto. you wanna bring up typical but you say the most typical response

that dead weight contract has more points then your "calder trophy winning sniper" im not saying it isnt bad, but wow is that hilarious

Petry had career year after career year leading up to this season, which has been plagued with significant injuries to key players, to himself, off ice/family issues, and an awful coach. Are we suppose to ignore last year/potential causes for his poor play because it helps your narrative?

Dermott is a dime a dozen depth defenseman, we have those in spades. Der is a decent, not good, prospect, we have some of those as well. These players dont move any needles, they are fillers.

so the bar you compare every player to is a rookie going through a slump? ok
