Garland based on a deal I saw yesterday

Description
Saw a deal yesterday that was Conor Garland for JBD and a 2nd. That really doesn't seem like enough, so I thought I'd make a similar idea trade that might work a bit better for Vancouver.

For the record I don't think it makes sense for Vancouver to trade him. I don't think they will recoup the value of that top 10 pick the moved for him, but I think this would constitute a competitive offer for a player like Garland. The Nucks won't get a 1st out of a team in Ottawa's position though, so if a 1st is a MUST, he would likely end up going to more of a contender.

  1. Thomson, Lassi

  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (OTT)
Détails additionnels:
I added a 2nd to the deal because the original seemed too low. I also switched JBD with Lassi. I don't think either is more valuable than the other, but from an Ottawa perspective I've liked the natural chemistry Bernard-Docker has had this season while playing with Chabot. I think those two click more than Lassi has with Chabot.

That said, it makes sense from a Canucks perspective as well, because in my opinion, Lassi has been the more impressive of the two at the NHL level this year. He's an efficient skater with his good speed and better lateral mobility, and he uses it to be quite an effective defender on the rush. He's been very good at gapping up and causing rush chances to fizzle. He's also been a notably more dangerous player than JBD as an offensive threat. Nothing miraculous, but he's got a frightening shot, and he's a strong passer as well.

I hope the sens come back to 100% healthy team, but I also wouldn't trade Thompson so early as he still has high potential, tank another year and develop the kids and this team will be awesome by the time the 2024/2025 season should start, my only real problem with the Sens is Matt Murray and Nikita Zaitsev

I think that would work, but probably better if both 2nds are 2022. Rutherford is looking for more "immediate" futures if that makes sense. IMO a good fit for both teams.

To add a high end RW on a really nice contract I'd be more than comfortable moving Thomson. They need to make an addition there, and D prospects seem like a position of depth to draw on.

The way I see it, the long term future is mostly set. Sanderson, Chabot, Zub and Brannstrom are the core 4, and JBD and Thomson are fighting for the same spot.

Also I agree wholeheartedly about Zaitsev, but Murray has been fine of late. He's been better than most of the names I've seen suggested as replacements

The Canucks traded a 9th overall pick for Garland basically and you’re not even giving up a first? Yeah two seconds ain’t gonna cut it buddy

That's a sunk cost fallacy. Can't allow what previous management have up to dictate future moves. This is a pretty solid offer that nets the Canucks a potential top 4 RHD +. I'd seriously consider taking it though I do wonder if Canucks would push for just a protected first instead.

Yes I did but the Canucks aren’t shopping Garland, teams are calling for him so they aren’t moving him unless a deal blows them away. A first and a decent prospect likely is what it takes to get a rather young, cost controlled player. Two second round picks won’t help much as much

Lassi Thomson was the 19th OA pick 2.5 years ago

So it's a 1st and two 2nds actually...

I actually agree with you on Thomson being a better fit for Vancouver than JBD. Canucks could really use a dman with a heavy shot which Thomson brings. I think a deal between Ottawa and Van for Boeser or Garland just makes so much sense.

If Canucks can address defense with that trade it frees them up to move Miller for a C prospect too.

The Sens could also "afford" to sacrifice Thomson if a few things happen :

- extend Artem Zub for 4 or 5 years

- JBD is a rgular D-man (just needs more experience and to gain some strength)

- are actually open to have Brannstrom on RD. They weren't before but it seems they are now... (they are hard to follow lol)

So yeah, it's the type of deal the Sens need to do as RW is the main team weakness and there are so many forward injuries right now

Next year :

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Boeser/Garland
Greig - Norris - Batherson
Formenton - Pinto - Brown
Crookshank - Paul - White

I think I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around moving so many significant assets for Garland because im not sure he’s going to be much of an upgrade over someone like Kuzmenko, who wouldn’t cost anything but money, if they could sign him.

Maybe I’m undervaluing Garland a bit but the deal made in the summer certainly wasnt just Garland for 9th overall. Vancouver moved THREE cap dumps and also acquired OEL with money retained.

The three cap dumps was essentially to take on OEL as Arizona was dumping his contract.

I’m not sure I can agree with that. OEL was looking to go to Vancouver and Vancouver was looking to add him.

Those cap dumps individually would have been expensive to get rid of all three definitely negatively affected the trade significantly more than OEL did.
