Rumors have Strome signing somewhere between 5mil-5.75mil. For these purposes, we'll do the worst case. Regarding Kakko, I really don't think he's shown anything over these 3 years to get anything higher than 2.25million right now. There's 0 consistency there. He will eventually blossom which bodes well for NYR's cap in the short term. but for now, I don't see him making anything more than this.
I went back to the early season lines, because I still think it's what makes the most sense. The 3rd line does take a bit of a hit here, but hopefully Hunt can continue to progress well to make that look better.
RFAs not extended here can be moved at the deadline for a rental, or in the offseason for picks.
I didn't move Nemeth, because I really don't think things are going too differently than when Drury signed him to this deal for him to bail out now. It's possible he's moved next offseason, maybe. Nemeth has had a bit of a slow start but is starting to find his role nicely now, I think. I still think this signing is a bit of an L for Drury, but it still does work with the cap for 22-23 and 23-24, so may as well keep going. The silly M-NTC could mean NYR would need to pay to move him, which would probably be undesirable.
For 2023-2024, the Rangers have 14 contracts signed and projected 12.9million in space, which should be enough to sign their key pieces in Chytil (~3mil), Miller (~2.5mil), and Lafreniere (I'm really down on his projected next contract due to his play right now, I'm going to go with ~3mil for now), which leaves ~4.4mil for the remaining 4-6 bottom six/scratches.
Just because you cant justify paying him more, that wont stop other teams from an offer sheet that prices the Rangers out, which wouldnt be much.
Even if you dump Nemeth, that barely gives you any breathing room to protect from any kind of offer sheet (you have to replace Nemeth which is about ~1mil, so you can pay Kakko a maximum of 3.5mil, give or take). Assuming the Strome rumors are rooted in active conversations and he will be signed, there's simply no way they will be able to block a 6mil offer sheet, for example.
This is pretty akin to saying don't go outside, you could get struck by lightning : P

Not really. You know that teams can offer sheet Kakko and price out the Rangers. You dont know if youll get struck by lightning.
I bet oilers fans were saying that yakupov would eventually blossom.
There’s zero reason to be confident that he will.
Yakupov was just extremely lazy and had zero hockey sense. Kakko has been doing all the right things away from the puck, he is only recently starting to develop more confidence as a scorer.
Man you guys are already giving up blias in this gm what are you gonna do the next year when laf, miller, chytil all need to be signed
Read the description regarding the following year.
It's a weird thing for Blais. As you see, to keep him, you need to bail out on Nemeth. Unfortunately he missed out on his trial year. I can see it going either way, I guess. I loved the small sample size from Blais, but it's a pretty tough fork in the road to choose between Nemeth and Blais, I think, especially considering you likely need to pay to move Nemeth given the bone-head M-NTC

Unless I did my math wrong you guys would actually have 10.7 million heading into next year (this is with the salary cap staying the same ofc). In all honesty I wouldn't be shocked if some team with nothing to loose threw 6x3 or 7x2 at laf as former no.1 over picks don't appear on the market too much. Same thing with miller would not be shocked if some team throws 4-5 million dollars to force the rangers hand
Any body care to entertain a Laf + someone else to Chicago in order to have a 50% retained Kane or Toews? NYR faceoffs are gonna be a factor in playoffs…just a thought to see if a miracle lands Laf in Chicago.

The issue for the rangers in the playoffs is going to be that they’re significantly worse than every team they’ll play. They shouldn’t be buyers.

Keeping Lafreniere should be priority. I doubt he doesn’t turn into at least a top 6 LW. And that’s what ya need when you have 11 mil on your other left winger.
In 2019 that was absolutely true. But in all honestly the bread and butter benefit from each other equally now. I really want to give Strome a RNH contract (8 years but ~5.25M AAV instead of ~6M)
