I mean sure, it's really not hard for a winger to switch sides, especially this early in their careers

This is just an observation, but according to this make-up, all of their right-wingers would be left-handed. That makes it easier to cut-in and shoot or set up for a one-timer, but not as easy to both break-out or make cross ice passes. Just an observation. smile

Lafreniere has probably played LW since he was a boy and that's what he's use to.

I'd rather have seasoned and elite professionals like Panarin or Kreider play on their off-wing than a 19 year old teenager who had a sub-optimal rookie season.

If Lafreniere is clearly struggling at LW or if several RWs on the Rangers are ravaged by injuries, then maybe it's necessary.

I just think Lafreniere should continue growing in his current role as a top 6 forward for the Rangers before they need to "rock the boat".

Just my two cents smile

I think you overvalue the side of a faceoff dot a winger stands on, the game is way too fluent for it to be very relevant. Wingers switching sides is the least relevant positioning swap in the game.

I agree Lafrenière will move to the right, they did it last season. I agree he will be paired with the breadman, but I think Strome will center them. I think theyll have Mika center Kreider and kakko to start.

It does matter in a lot of small ways. Stick checking across your body, accelerating through turns on your strong side, protecting the puck, shooting on the rush, etc.
There are a lot of instances where your reach and puck ability are affecting by being on your off hand. Positioning isn't that difficult to adapt to.

None of that has anything to do with what side you stand on for a face off, especially parts about the rush. Again hockey is a very fluent game you dont just stand still or only stay in 1 part of the ice.

I rhink Lafreniere would have a very easy time adjusting to the right side, its not a difficult switch

Even then.
Like I said, the differences aren't huge, but they are everywhere. Even lining up for a draw, teams have set plays, whether it is to get a scoring chance or defensive possession.
A RH and LH can be in the same position, but you want them on their forehand according to the same play vs. their backhand. It might not matter for pond hockey, but we're talking professional level where a 3 inch change in a passing lane or 1 extra second to line up a pass/shot, is the difference between a good play or a bad one.
