Because Ristolainen got a better deal and so did Seth Jones. Rielly is miles better than Ristolainen and he's right on par with Jones. If you want an elite puck moving defenceman from a team that's in a clear win now mode and likes those exact types of players, you're going to pay a premium. Likely going to overpay to convince Toronto to even move him right now. You're offer is severely lacking in quality. Easy decline.
Rielly is better than Risto, but disagree with Jones.
The Risto trade was a shocking overpay.
If Leafs can get similar, they should take it and run with with Sandin.
(Also, if the argument was simply, its a seller's d-man market, could say Devils should charge premium for Subban at 50% too)

hes not a seth jones dont get me wrong, but, this guy is a top pairing guy on a top team in the nhl, hes been scoring the same as hamilton over the last few years, im not saying send us everything you have, im just saying the leafs get more than that in a riley trade, a first and a good defensive prospect and maybe a third, miles wood and white just dosent make sense for both sides lets be honest here. idk why this is a bad trade for both sides, leafs would be losing their best defenseman with no replacement for him and NJD is getting another OFD
plus engvall adds no value to this trade
I don't think NJD is a realistic landing place for Rielly.
And I picked Wood since Leafs always seem to be trading for him.
But the idea was to provide a realistic comp off Barrie deal.

Because Rielly is better. The narrative leafs give on Rielly defense game is bad. He never had a stable d partner nor had a good one until Brodie.
He's get more value than Barrie easily even with Barrie being a RD which makes GM's go crazy
Rielly's defense wouldn't concern me as much as him losing PP time to a rookie.
