How trades work - usually you need to understand the other team's perspective to make sure the trade makes sense for them..
Kerfoot is a fine player and the value here isn't bad. The problem is, Canes just re-signed Marty and while he's very replaceable on the ice, they brought him back for his locker room and off-ice contributions as a leader. This is especially important with the TDA signing and some of the other pieces that have left in the offseason (Dougie, McGinn, Foegele). Additionally, Kerfoot doesn't really plug a hole that the Canes have. They're looking for a top 6 winger.
As such - Canes don't do this trade.
