I think most Wings fans should be happy with this deal, I however, think marner is amazing, just paid too much in general, I hate any contract north of 10m and i realize he would have gotten that pretty much anywhere, but I dont believe building a long term winner with 10-11m per year contract works. They just arent team friendly contracts, Crosby contract, Hedman, MacKinnon all took discounts to try and help out

Completely agree, Price was the first player to win a series making more than 10m this year. Although Marner is worth more than Bertuzzi and a 2nd, Toronto would end up saving somewhere around 5m in cap space which they gave up a first to get when they traded Marleau

The leafs would also need 3 first rounders. People should look at all Marners numbers before you talk about a foolish trade like this

Paper value is slanted in Detroit's favor. I wouldn't take this though. Marner is good, but he's too expensive and disappears in the playoffs. The Wings don't need to get to the playoffs now, they need to stockpile a few more high draft picks, then go on a deep playoff run. Marner doesn't help in either of those regards.
It's more of a fit issue than anything.

I don’t think any wings fans don’t think that marner is significantly better than bertuzzi. It’s just Det not being a good fit for what we need and where we’re headed. Marner would get a better return from another team and I personally don’t want to have sign any player for more than 11m a year. Marner has immense value but I just would prefer to stay away from him for the cap hit and More importantly for the real trade it would take. Which would be a lot more than what this shows. It would be multiple firsts and prospects.

Unless we got the next McDavid and he takes 10.5 I absolutely hate the idea of any player getting double digits per year. It makes it so much harder to build a balanced team around those numbers.
