Would love to see players think about their teams first, but they are very few of them out there that would take such a hit. He'll get an offer at the very least around 8M$ from many other teams. Detroit may want to move on him. They would over bid just to take him out of Colorado. It's one thing to give a discount to your team, but when you see Makar and others make more than you by a big margin.. you jump.

If he wants the max dollars yeah he is going to have to get it somewhere else, but he also knows he isn’t going to a better team nor is he going to get Mikko money because he isn’t better, and if you had already made $45M do you really want to finish your career with a bottom dweller with no chance of winning a cup? That $9.25M figure is pretty crazy, especially in a flat cap environment. Would a team like St Louis offer him $8-8.5? Maybe but $9.25 is really, really pushing it.
