I'll be honest, I know very little about the Devil's prospect pool as in who's ready who's not, looking at their current roster the D does look a touch on the weak side at the moment, I guess it depends if management feels they are a Morgan Rielly piece away from becoming competitive.
Cliff notes version
LD
Smith, Siegenthaler there now
Butcher one more year left.
Kevin Bahl is huge (6’7”) and skates very well. Needs to refine point play. Projects as top-4 and likely becomes regular next year.
Shakir Mukhamadullin is coming next summer from KHL. Big kid, just set KHL record for points as teenage d-man. Projects as top-4 with some top-pair upside (and back-to-KHL downside)
Ethan Edwards has 2-3 years at Michigan. He is offensive LHD with a lot of edge to his game. Has high ceiling, but likely bottom-pair offensive piece.
Okhotyuk is hard-hitting depth piece. He is close to NHL, but probably won’t be more than physical 6/7 d-man.
Vukojevich is size/skill project (and childhood friend of Hughes).
RD
Severson, Subban there now.
Reilly Walsh is smooth skating, puck-mover from Harvard. Right now, he likely arrives after next year and the hope is he fills Subbans role as offensive half on 2nd pair. Probably with Bahl.
Case McCathy is a defensive RD. Crease-clearing type with a bit of edge/nasty in his game. He is at Boston University now, and probably there for another year or two. His upside is he becomes stay-at-home partner to offensive LD on 2nd or 3rd pair.
In short, we have a lot of guys who project as middle-pair d-men. Could use another RD. And could use top-pair defensive stud.
