Building a winning culture

Description
The leafs have no idea what a winning culture is, so I will build one for them.

A winning culture does not include half your cap committed to 4 stars who do nearly nothing in the playoffs.
A winning culture IS when you have equal balance troughout your lineup as well as excellent leadership and guys who want to win

Hard no from Detroit. Maybe without the 1st in there or some retained salary. Marner is far too expensive.

I like the idea of having Oleksiak and Vatrano on the Leafs.

I'm wondering if we could upgrade the 4C.

I think Montreal should toss in some extra cheese curds, so the Americans like Matthews can try it. (Im pretty sure Americans dont have many cheese curds)

yeah, the leafs totally need to bring in guys who know how to win! Like Muzzin, and Bogo! or guys known for their leadership and heart like Foligno, Simmonds and Spezza! or vets that have seen it all like Plekanec, Thornton and Boyle!
Dubas has gotta find some guys like that

well, you've got one thing right. The cost of trading for Marner would be a hell of a lot more expensive than that. There is no way in the world the leafs do that trade

Detroit is in a rebuild, it would be insane for them to give up 5 assets to get 1.

It doesn't matter one iota how good Marner is, Detroit cannot give up three players and two high picks to get him.

It would set back the rebuild at least 4 years and waste all the good years of the players we keep, including Marner's.

They are 1st and 2nd round picks out of 7 rounds, that is high. 3-5 rounders are mid, 6-7 are low.

The Washington pick alone will net Vince Dunn.

No rebuilding team will mortgage their future for one player.

im not saying Detroit would do this (though they do highhandedly win value wise here, i mean, it's not even close in that regard). I'm saying that a late 20s pick and a mid 30's picks are not 'high' picks when you're getting a guy like Marner back. And you would certainly not be mortgaging your future on picks who will turn into guys who have like a 10-15% chance at being good NHLers.

Does Vince Dunn have a 10-15% chance of being a good NHL player? The Washington pick will get him.

This deal is the very definition of gutting a team. It's 33% of our 1st line + 33% of our 2nd line + 33% of our 3rd line + 50% of our 4 best picks. All for one (1) player.

What sort of team would we ice next season if we did this? There is nothing to replace the lost players with, we have a grand total of two (2) good forward prospects in Grand Rapids and they're nowhere near being ready next year. This deal would immediately turn Detroit into another Buffalo.

If Yzerman where to even think about doing this not only would he be sacked within one Planck time he'd be tarred and feathered and run out of town too.

HIS AVV is a little high but not at the point that teams would be afraid to take it on. His actual salary owed is very good and he is one of the best Defensive forwards in the game and 2nd best playmaker behind McDavid top 5 in scoring.

I dont care about Vince Dunn and I dont care about what the wings lose here. It doesnt matter because that is not near enough to get Marner. Not even close. You want elite talent you have to pay for it and this is not paying for it. And if you wanna over pay for Vince Dunn instead, be my guest

The problem isn't how good Marner is (he's good), the problem is what giving up all those assets would do to Detroit.

Detroit is in a rebuild. Rebuilding teams acquire assets, they don't give them up.

That's a bit generous. Ya, he's a great player, but not worth his AAV and not worth the price of acquiring him.

I don't give a fig leaf about what you care or don't care about.

This is objectively a disaster of a trade for Detroit. No Detroit fan with more than two working brain cells has ever proposed anything as stupid as this.

This proposal is from a Toronto fan, direct your ire at him not at those pointing out how stupid the trade is from Detroit's point of view.

The fact that this is a stupid deal for Detroit doesn't preclude the possibility that it is equally stupid for Toronto.

well that's why i was discussing the status of the picks with you not the entire proposal, You were the one who went off about the whole thing to me, bringing up some unconnected and random Dunn trade for some reason. So again, those are not high picks, especially when you are getting a guy who can put up 100 points, can PK better than anyone your current team has and is good defensively at evens. He's not even a great goal scorer and he' had near double to goals as your best guys this year.

I actually did see this from a wings fan, but the difference was that he included Namestnikov instead of Erne and had salary retention on marner

Did you count his brain cells? :-)

This is an impossible trade for Detroit to make as it would make us unable to even ice a full roster next season. We need the few good players we have and every single pick we can lay our hands on for the next few years. In 3-4 years time the situation may be different but at this time... Simply no.

They are 1st and 2nd round picks out of 7 rounds, that is high. 3-5 rounders are mid, 6-7 are low.

The Washington pick alone will net Vince Dunn.

No rebuilding team will mortgage their future for one player.

I don't think that trade would impact Detroit's future. Losing Bertuzzi would suck but Fabbri and Erne are replaceable and Wings could afford to part with a late 1st and a 2nd for a young high end talent. The only problem is Marner's AAV as it would screw up Yzerman's cap structure.

well that's why i was discussing the status of the picks with you not the entire proposal, You were the one who went off about the whole thing to me, bringing up some unconnected and random Dunn trade for some reason. So again, those are not high picks, especially when you are getting a guy who can put up 100 points, can PK better than anyone your current team has and is good defensively at evens. He's not even a great goal scorer and he' had near double to goals as your best guys this year.

It was you that claimed that the pick had a 10-15% chance of becoming a good player.

The Washington pick will translate into a top-4 defender. That is significantly higher than 10-15%.

If Detroit did this deal we wouldn't even be able to ice a full roster next season.

We have no replacements for the playersvwe lose.

We need the picks we lose.

A deal has to work for both parties. This deal doesn't work for any of them. This has absolutely nothing to to with the skills of Marner or what his salary is, it is about the situation Detroit is in - in a rebuild and the consequences the trade would have on the team.

Who do you replace Fabbri and Erne with for next season?
