I'm curious which team will have the highest average WAR. It's a bit different for Colorado because they're about to start peaking. Specifically Makar...he's got 2 years in the NHL and does Byram even have a WAR yet? Hard to build up WAR with 2 or less years in the NHL. BUT also at the same time...Duchene was drafted in 2009 so he's out.

They definitely have some youngsters coming up, but a lot of their current group (Grubauer, Saad, Donskoi, Burakovsky, Graves, Kadri, Girard have been acquired in trades or free agency).

drafting has been an issue for a while. It has been much better under the Sakic post Roy era and after Hepple became director of Amateur scouting in 2015 and able to pivot their amateur scouting focus. Now that Wade Klippenstein has taken over, pretty confident with him at the helm. Was the head scout for the wheat kings for years before joining the Avs, and apparently Klippenstein was the guy who the most vocal about the avs taking Makar. Ill trust that man then

The previous Director of Amateur of scouting Richard Pracey had no vision when drafting and it shows that they have no NHLers from 2010-2015 besides Lottery picks
And since Pracey joined the Flyers right after that...their drafting ability looks like it has fallen off, looking bleaker and bleaker each year

This is higher than I thought they would be tbh. I guess this really depends on how high each team was picking since 2010 - maybe rank based on the difference in WAR between the player they picked and the expected WAR for that draft position (eg if Rantanen was taken 10th overall in 2015 then rank all of the players WAR from that draft and subtract the 10th best WAR from Rantanen's WAR to see if they did better or worse than if it was a redraft), right now its kinda hard for teams who picked late to have higher WAR than teams who got a ton of high picks
