Marner - Why and Why Not

Description
WHY TOR WOULD: Kuznetsov has the same skating and elite playmaking ability as Marner, but he's $3M cheaper and has the ability to play center as well (which would have come in handy for TOR this series once Tavares went down). They also get a Jensen who's a right handed, high end skating defensive defensemen, an analytical darling and cheap. Lastly, they get VV, a young, cheap goalie ready to take the next step. Essentially they get three very strong players for the price that they were paying Marner.

WHY TOR WOULD NOT: There might be a couple better looking packages out there. Plus, can't imagine Kuz would fit in well with the media and fans there, at least if things don't go well.

WHY WSH WOULD: They need a shake up and this would be a shake up. They get a little younger and would still have Kuz skating and skill, plus Marner is better defensively. Marner is one of those wingers that can drive a line without a legit center. Him feeding Ovi would be fun.

WHY WSH WOULD NOT: Same reason TOR fans are losing it: Marner costs a lot for a dude that hasn't performed in the playoffs. Not performing in the playoffs isn't a big deal to me, some players take time (like Oshie), but $10,9M is a lot money for a team spending to the cap.

It’s actually not bad.

I really just don’t see Dubas parting with Marner, not yet at least. like you said, it takes some players time before they get going.

I think that framework has value for both sides, and is definitely something both teams would look at.

I think the big issue for Toronto is they don't have anymore flexibility. Sure they have a few more players for the same money, but there's no option to save on the cap.

I will say that, as someone who has watched a lot of Marner the last 5 years, his renown as a defensively responsible winger is very overblown. Being a good penalty killer doesn't mean you're good defensively, he skates by lots of pucks and has trouble clearing the blue when under pressure. I also don't think he can drive his own line, based on how poor his shot is.

I don't think the leafs want Kuznestov- they probably prefer players that like Pepsi.

Its a steep price, but the caps do have McMichael or Eller to step into the 2C role.

I just dont see the Capitals making a move for Marner after the Mantha trade earlier this year. Without it, I think it would be more likely, but that trade would send one of Mantha, Oshie, or Wilson to the third line.

Don't think McMichael is ready for 2C duty. He's played virtually no NHL games. Breaking him in at 3C seems better, but not sure that happens immediately in 2021. Eller is a superb 3C and I suspect McMichael would be a slight downgrade, at least at first, compared to Eller.

I would expect Eller to play 2C for at least the first half of the season if Kuznetsov is gone, and if McMichael plays well he could move up later in the year. Eller could, in my opinion, be a 2C on other teams, so Im not as hesitant about him playing 2C.

I think the plan no matter what Caps do this summer will send Oshie to the 3rd line.

who do you think they play there instead? I can see Sprong going to 2LW and Mantha or Wilson at 2RW, but I think they may be rushing Sprong.

That's what I hope they do. Assuming no trades happen I'd go

I don't think McMichael is close, most beat reporters/guys on the radio think he's 2 years away. Maybe they're wrong but idk just seems that fans think he's much closer than he actually is. I think the best solution in this situation would be move Eller to 2C (like you said) and go out and sign a 3C but to do that TOR would have to retain some salary.

No question- and he was great for the caps. Was probably their best player in their run. And where has he been since? What happened this year? Why would the caps want to move him?

Think it's a classic case of a player needing a new start, like what we saw with Bennett going from CGY to FLA.

Bennett wanted to leave CGY because of playing time. CGY never wanted to trade him- actually refused to do it many times. We know with the caps it's off ice stuff.

Bennett wanted to leave because of playing time - correct. He wasn't receiving playing time because he had 24 points in 90 games in the last two seasons for CGY. As a 4th overall pick, he should be more productive. So at that point, a fresh start was needed.

Kuzy is still productive on the ice. Quite productive - it is the off the ice issues like you said. A fresh start with new management could help. Plus with the Leafs debacles in the playoffs, they could use all the help they can get with playoff experience

Listen I'm making light about his off-ice stuff for jokes, but I actually really like the player- like I said, was amazing in their run. But no team, not just the leafs, is ever going to trade a 90 point player for another player four years older with off-ice issues.
