Piggybacking off an Earlier Marner Trade
Why does everyone hate Marner? Are Leafs fans just bored of trading away Nylander? This is a decent package, but I think it definitely makes the Leafs worse at forward. Fabbro is a promising prospect but didn't have great results last year when played higher in the lineup, and the Leafs need at RD has been lessened after this offseason. I bet they'd be happier seeing what they have first than trading away one of their best forwards.
I don't see the Leafs breaking up their core at this point. More likely they move prospects/picks to add at the fringes of the roster.

Barzal
I have to imagine a bridge deal for Barzal makes the most sense. He doesn't want to take a long-term discount due to COVID (which this contract clearly is) and the Islanders can't pay him what comparable RFA's have gotten in recent years. 2-3 year bridge, maybe 6 mil makes sense. Still less than what Laine/Point/Tkachuk got last year.
Islanders best move is to move Boychuk at this point. Attaching high draft picks to him (maybe one of the seconds they got for Toews) seems to be the only way.
Probably have to move Leddy as well, I don't see him playing in the AHL.

Anderson will play

Totally incorrect. Weegar would be a huge add for this team. The way I see it there are two problems with adding him. 1 is acquisition cost, because obviously it takes more than this to get him. If you have to include Kerfoot in the deal (and maybe you wouldn't) that makes it dicey, as he's going to be a big part of our middle 6 going forward. They won't want Justin Holl because they have enough D men right now, so you'd have to make another move to send Holl (or somebody else, likely Dermott) somewhere else, which adds layers of complication. But if you have to give up a 2021 first rounder for Weegar, do you want to do that knowing how important ELC and cheap contributors will be to this team going forward.
2 is the salary cap this year and going forward. You might be able to find space for what Weegar wants this year, but what then. If you tie up some money in him over a longer-term, you're now going to struggle to resign Morgan Rielly in 2 years (and Hyman next year). The Leafs have very fixed costs for the next 4-5 years and need to be sure that whoever they add is going to fit in that fixed cost structure. If you add Brodie and Weegar this offseason, you risk losing out on Rielly and Hyman. Not sure if that makes our team better overall. And if you're only going to have Weegar for two years, you have to be careful how much you give up to get him.

Cernak
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ASoftDumpInTheCorner</b></div><div>Or you trade him for a bunch of assets and let Sandin develop into that role?</div></div>
Why? Why would you not try to keep MORGAN RIELLY, who is a top-5 offensive defenceman in the NHL. He's young and will be effective for another 7-10 years. He's a big part of our core. Why trade him? How many teams trade away their core pieces while they are competing? They don't and neither will Dubas. You don't win stanley cups by trading away good players for "assets." If you are being forced to choose between Eric Cernak and Morgan Rielly, shouldn't that be an easy choice?
Assets can very often equal getting almost nothing in return. Lots of times stars are traded for prospects and picks that end up never being any good.

Exactly! This is what everyone forgets. Adding another RHD and keeping them beyond two years pretty much means Rielly is gone.
The only guy I'd be willing to look at adding is David Savard, since he's a pending UFA (If Columbus is wanting to move him).

What is left for them to do
LA probably needs more for Matt Roy. I think they'd be interested in Dermott since they are shorter on the left side. Potentially Dermott and a 2 might be hard for them to say no to.

One trade to fix Tampa and Ottawa
I am not sure if Tampa will want to move both of those guys. If they are moving Sergachev and Johnson for example, they can then afford to keep Cirelli. Or whoever they value most, so I don't see them moving both of those guys. I am not sure any amount of prospects or picks will change that.
I also don't think either player signs those contracts. Put it in their perspective, they've just been moved from the best team in the league to the worst (arguably or not, they're bottom 3). You now want them to commit 7 years at a discounted rate? No chance. They'll both want bridge deals to try and get paid when the cap goes back up, silly to agree to a long-term discount right now.
I actually think Tampa will try hard to move McDonagh before they move Sergachev.

He will be happier here
Detroit isn't doing that, doesn't help them at all.
So, at this current point in their careers, I would argue Nylander > Kane. At worst, it's equal. What about the next 3 years? Is there any chance Kane out performs Nylander in that period of time? And yet, the Leafs would have to give up more? No way. And no way they're doing this deal either.

Leafs Proposal 7v2 - See Ya Willie Nylie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cbdpushp</b></div><div>I think Toronto wins this trade. they get a better, more hard-working player, for cheaper and opens up cap space to sign another stud defenseman. How is that NOT a win????</div></div>
"More hard-working player" based on what? The eye test? What other people say? Nylander is a cost-controlled 30 scoring winger who's still under 25. Every other team in the league loves that guy, Leafs fans want to trade him for garbage, I hate it. Trading Nylander is a terrible move, just to sign Mackenzie Weegar to an offersheet that gets matched? Brutal.

You don't trade away very good young players for other players who are not as good.

Finishing the Off-Season
In what world does acquiring Ryan Kesler make ANY sense for the Leafs? For the 1,000th time, working in LTIR is NOT an advantage. It is a huge handcuff, especially in this area of a static salary cap. HORRIBLE idea.
Rest of trades are meh, with the end result probably not helping the team much.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gordon_Bombay</b></div><div>Lehtonen over Dermott for sure</div></div>
I would imagine, but I definitely think either one will have to earn it. This will be Dermott's year to sink or swim, and we see if he's just a bottom pair guy or if he can play a complete game.
I don't think Thornton is coming to Toronto and even if he does will he be effective on this team? He is very slow and that is not our team identity.
Also don't think Ottawa is giving away picks for guys they don't need.

I can't imagine the Kings are excited to give you a prospect for two average players who don't fit up with their timeline. Deal makes the Leafs worse in the short-term. Don't see it working for either team.

Yeah I don't think Detroit is doing that. I think Florida would be interested in Kerfoot but not Holl considering they have tons of other D right now (whether he is better or worse than them is debatable).
Don't want AA on the Leafs, and he's certainly not going to play centre.

I have to think it takes more than that to get Weegar, but I bet they would be interested in Kerfoot. They really don't have any centres right now and there's nobody better than him available in free agency. Kerfoot, plus a 2nd and 4th or even that 2021 first I would do.

No no no no no. The objective is to make the team better. The attractive part about Weegar is how much he'll cost. If he costs Nylander, you say no and run away kicking and screaming. Nylander is very good at the hockey and the scoring of goals. Scoring goals make team win. Nylander make team win. Keep Nylander. Trade worse players.

IF, and I can not stress this enough, they should not, they trade Nylander, it needs to be for a forward to replace him and a top-4 defenceman. If that trade is not available, don't make it.

Holtby creates a bigger problem, not a fan of that move.
Approaching Pulock's camp with that offer is not a bad idea. Not sure he'd sign it, but it can't hurt to ask.
I think you can get Savard but not with salary retention, I think Columbus will want to clear room. Maybe a pick and medium prospect would do it.

If you want them to improve on defence, signing Tanev, Gudas and Maroon would be a poor start. None of them are good at stopping the other team from shooting, which is an essential function of defence. Offence needs to come from other places than the top 6, if they could fit Duclair he would be a huge help on the 3rd line.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchMarner_16</b></div><div>Duclair and kahun are all nylander replacements if he were to be traded for a dman.</div></div>
Stop trying to trade Nylander! He is young, good at scoring goals and affordable. Why would we want to move him? Getting one defender doesn't fix the roster, it's better to add multiple players who can defend than put all your eggs in one basket.
