How bout Draisaitl for Matthews and two first round picks. One first for the extra term and one for the extra salary.

I feel like stars are overrated on this site, SPECIFICALLY DRAISAITL. 75% (74.86% to be exact [EvolvingHockey]) of his points are contributed by McDavid. He's not a good player defensively either, in fact he's among the worst in the league. Why would a team like Carolina empty their team for someone who's very much a product of the best player in the league

So much this. These asks for guys like Eichel, Drai, McDavid.... all crazy. Drai is amazing, but he plays controller disconnected defense. Everybody is talking “I can’t believe Edmonton can’t build a team around these two guys” and I’m sitting here like “I can’t believe people expect a team to win in the playoffs when their star players only show up in the offensive zone”. Yes I do think Edmonton could def use some upgrades in depth positions. But EVERYBODY has to do their job in all three zones. McDavid and Drai were both a -2 in the playoffs. I’m not a big fan of +/- but it’s useful when context is considered. And in a playoff series, that means the other team scored more goals when you were on the ice. I don’t see anybody talking about that. Stop worrying about McDavid asking for a trade and maybe start asking him to do something even when he doesn’t have the puck. Even superstars can back check. On the -2 in the playoffs for McDavid and Draisaitl, take out ENG and they're even. In the end, that series was decided by Hellebyuck saving 7.5 goals above average in 3 OT games and a 1 goal+ENG game. Yes, they aren't perfect but their good definitely outweighs their bad. And on the +/- front, after being ripped for being a -7 last year Drai was +29 in the regular season this year (2nd in the league) to go with being 2nd in the league in points. If you're giving up a player of that calibre on an $8.5million contract with term, you're 100% asking for the moon if he's not forcing your hand.

I feel like you're vastly underrating a guy who is the reigning Hart and Art Ross winner and is coming off a season where his +22 goal differential at 5v5 was 4th best in the entire league (among forwards).

In a shortened time frame, and he still has a negative on ice impact from an analytical standpoint. He's ELITE going one way, fine... but let's not act like he's ever been asked to carry a team on his own. Like, if McDavid did his PCL again and Draisaitl carried the oilers, that's different. But Drai's never had a truly elite season where McDavid hasn't been a part of at least 60% of his points.

That's because they're the 2 best offensive talents in the world and they play together a lot. I don't know why you'd expect otherwise - every other elite player gets to play with their teams' best on the powerplay at least.

Oh, and last year when McDavid went down with an injury Draisaitl carried the team on his shoulders, posting 2 P/GP and cementing his Hart Trophy win.

You do realize that McDavid benefits from playing with Draisaitl too, right? This is a Lemieux-Jagr relationship, not Lemieux-Brown.

Once again you missed that Draisaitl's goal differential was 4th best in the league.

Mario Lemieux factored in on 40% of the points Jagr scored as a pen. Jagr factored in on 37.65% of Lemieux's points.

Draisaitl is a McDavid product, because otherwise, this would go two ways. Draisaitl factors in on only 48.72% of McDavid's points. McDavid scores more than half his points away from McDavid, whereas Draisaitl is HIGHLY dependant on McDavid. McDavid is capable of doing things without Draisaitl. We don't see that from Draisaitl without McDavid.

Oh, and you missed that Draisaitl's xGA was the WORST IN THE LEAGUE! Worse than Milan Lucic, worse than Justin Abdelkator, worse than the Sabres! you don't seem to understand, playing against the Canucks and Senators will help your goal difference a ton.

Do the math and come back to me with the correlation between xGA and aGA. If you can't, I'll let you in on a little secret...

Go ahead and look at his shooting percentage with McDavid and then look at his xGA. I'll let you in on a little secret.... HE'S A McDAVID PRODUCT!

The R^2 for a plot of all 2020-21 skaters 5v5 xGA and GA is 0.889 (per NST). Really strong correlation overall. The outliers probably relate to PDO/sh%/sv%. Drai is one of these outliers, if I remember right he had the highest on-ice sv% above expected out of any player this year. Not sure what he could possibly be doing out there that helps his goalie get a .930 at 5v5 yet wouldn't show up in a measure of scoring chance quality against.

By all means ask the moon. But saying that package above isn’t even close? Oof. I do agree that Trocheck should probably be Aho or Svech, but I wouldn’t call that not even close

Well that's the issue is that there's nothing top tier coming back. Put Aho in there and now you have a conversation, you can probably pull another piece out (Jarvis or the first). Even though they got swept, the team is making progress. That Pacific is looking awfully weak again next year, the Oilers should be gearing up and not trading a top tier player for depth. If you got Aho and Pesce back, you've only taken a partial step back on offence but added a deeper team. The Oilers are at the point that they need to raise the bar every year or risk losing McDavid, trading Drai for anything other than something that makes you better today is a step in the wrong direction.

For sure. I replied to another response above saying something similar. Put Aho in place of Trockeck (I’d think you’d want Tro for 2C anyways) and take the first round pick out and I think it’s still a little hefty but closer
