Description
I know a lot of Isles nation have been very against trading for Taylor Hall and would rather a player like Palmieri because of the system the Isles play.

I agree that Palmieri fits our system better than Hall. However if you get Palmieri you are hoping he can replace 80-90% of what Anders Lee is. You are probably still worse team overall with Palmieri in for Lee. (Not saying that Palmieri is a bad player, he isn’t, I really like him as a player but he is not Lee) but if you think the isles can replicate what they did last year then Hall is your home run swing. Hall and Forsberg in my opinion are the only two players on the trade block that at their best can be better than Lee. (Yes Hall has not been good the last calendar year, he’s been in Jersey, Arizona and Buffalo 3 low scoring struggling teams, Arizona being the best of the three but cooled off from a hot start as Hall arrived)

Worse case Hall ends up on Pageau’s and Wahlstrom’s line, which could be nice too, honestly and he’s already still producing more than Dal Colle, Komarov, and Czarnik combined.

Best case Barzal and Eberle get revitalized with their new winger and gives us a legit 1st line in Lee’s absence and plays so well that the offseason turns into finding ways to sign him because he played so well.

Unfortunately with Palmieri he will most likely bounce around all three of the top lines because although he fits the system, he probably doesn’t fit that 1st line spot, and if you are betting the season on Bellows in his rookie year we are probably gonna have problems come playoffs.

***For Buffalo Fans***
For Hall you will get the Tatar deal, Picks in rounds 1,2, and 3. To get that type of return for an unretained 8mil rental, you will be getting Dal Colle and Komarov. Who are they, Dal Colle is a 3rd line plug and play, player who has as low of potential of an AHL’er or the High of a Nino Niederreiter type player and honestly that door is probably be closed already, but he already will fit in your bottom 6 regardless. Uncle Leo is there to hopefully help your culture problem. He did it with the Leafs and Isles, on the ice he’s a decent penalty killer, and will drag your team into battles. That’s pretty much it. But if you have young kids that need to feel good about themselves, he may be one of the best in the league.

Islanders Fans with the extra 2+ million what other rental would you like to see to add depth? I understand if you still think hall is a cancer but in my opinion it’s that only way I see us making another deep run.

Yeah palmeri fits the system and is similiar but not as good as Lee. So say hes 80% of lee. Well hall is 0% Lee and a complete crap shoot. I just dont trust the guy to make a difference.

Exactly, Hall by far makes the most sense. He’s still helping to drive play as well as he ever has, even on a crap Buffalo team and right now, he’s being centered by Eric Staal. The line of him, Eichel and Reinhart flirted with a xGF% of 70 before Eichel got hurt, and were actually outscoring their expect goal rate per hour by almost a third of a goal. Just imagine what he could do next to Barzal and Eberle.

Palmieri on the other hand is fine. I don’t know if I really believe he “fits the system” better than Hall would - I think they’d both find their place after some kind of adjustment period - but he’s not having a great year doesn’t drive play like Hall does, both in transition and in short attempt generation. I firmly believe right now is our best chance at a Cup, gotta strike while the iron is hot

If the Sabres have an old defensive defenseman with a low cap hit, someone like Greene or Kulikov, and if remove MDC, then this trade is good. Hall is not re signing with the Sabres, so his value is what other teams will offer. The most another team is going to offer is a 1st and maybe a second, the second is pushing it. So add a third going the Sabres way, remove MDC, and add a 7th or 6th defensive defenseman if they have one, and this trade is fine.

Coming from a Sabres fan I think you are including to many pieces for Hall...Bellows and the first should do it. Islanders aren't hurting for cap space with Lee gone for the rest of the season so no need for the Sabres to retain salary thus less going back. Sabres need to rebuild with young players so no need for them to take Kormarov only bc he has a year of contract left after this season.

Hall to the isles is a perfect trade this season:
-UFA
-Lee out remainder of season
-LW1

Issue would really be the cost. Isles don't have much of a prospect pool, so they need picks especially first rounders. If isles could do something with the 1 or 2 of the avs picks and one of their defensive prospects (MVS or wotherspoon) it would be ideal. Unfortunately, I see other teams outbidding the isles.

So the main reason I didn’t include bellows is that I believe Lou is going to try everything in his power to keep Bellows as a part of the future core of the Isles when our 29-31 year olds start aging out. I think the isles will be willing to give plenty of picks for hall but to lose a player that most likely would be in our line up for several years for a rental might be to costly. Picks are magic beans (some I feel like the sabers can use) and you could end up with a player just as good even in a later round due to the pandemic. If hall had term and Lou wanted him, absolutely Bellows would be going to Buffalo in a deal.

I do disagree about Uncle Leo though, if your team is going to get younger the next few seasons, Leo honestly isn’t a bad guy to have around them. He helped Barzal and Beauvillier immensely when he got here. Did Lou over pay? Absolutely. Did Lou think we’d be a good team after JT left? No lol Lou expected not to have to worry about the cap for years and we turned around quicker than expected haha

I would also love to see Buffalo turn this around quick to give their fan base a playoff series soon. I think a grizzled team President for Buffalo would do a lot of good.

I agree that normally I would like to hold on to draft picks but if you were going to spend picks any year on rentals this may be the year. With covid no young players are playing or if they are, they can’t be watch in person. Add that to the fact that Lou is the only GM without an advanced statistics department, he might literally be “Dart Boarding” names on draft night. I also think Lou knows this about himself too and will uses they picks to try to relieve cap for next year and help fill in the LW1 hole left this year.

That’s kind of my point though. Palmieri would be an OK stop gap in Lee’s absence, but I can’t imagine the isles doing what they did in the bubble, let alone go further.

I agree Hall is 0% of anders Lee, and that’s kind of the point. With Hall you are creating a new identity to the first line. A little faster and more soft skill line. Which might not be bad for the isles. A bonus is if the faster play style of hall might help Eberle on a per game basis and help bring some stability to his game.

The rest of our team have proved they can be responsible defensively, if the 1st line has to have offensive zone possession to be effective it isn’t the worse thing due to Barzals puck control ability. If they need to be baby sat Pelech and Pullock have been advanced stat heroes this season. I can see the isles doing much worse that trading for Hall.
