Your 21-22 New York Islanders
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SNipeSHowInc</b></div><div>Not sure Bellows will be taken unless Islanders give up something for Seattle to take him. What do you think the protection list looks like? I have Barzal-Eberle-Lee-Nelson-Beauvillier-Peageau-Bailey-Pulock-Pelech-Greene (even though hes a UFA islanders dont meet the criteria of having 1 dman under contract next season unless they protect a UFA)</div></div>
It was confirmed we signed Greene.
The protection list is going to be:
7 Forwards: Barzal, Beau, Nelson, Bailey, Lee, Pageau, and (Eberle or Bellows)
3 Defense: Pelech, Pulock, Mayfield
1 Goalie: Varlamov
Exposure Required: Martin, Clutterbuck, Greene, Appleby (G)
Seattle will either take Bellows or Eberle unless there is a trade.

I unfortunately learned my lesson with Jan Kovar, I’d love for him to win a job out of training camp and be what Kovar was hyped up to be. A goalie coming over from the KHL and a Player especially forwards are very different. The Panarin and Kaprisovs of the world are extremely rare.
Listen I’d love it but I watched Flipper pack Kovars bags for him in the pre-season of 2018-19 lol

Trying to think like Lou
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>pelech and sorokin will both get more - Pelech probably around 4.5-4.75 depending on term. Sorokin at least 4 mill. When you take into account Greene's bonuses there is no chance they will be able to re-sign Palmieri.</div></div>
So I’m using the Toews’ contract as Pelech’s comparable. Even cap friendly has it about a 85% comparable. He’s getting 4.1 over 4 years. He’s better offensively, Pelech’s better defensively. I think it evens out and in a flat cap world he’ll get around 4. Sorokin knows he will be PAID in 2 years if he turns out the way we are all praying it does. He will be getting big money for probably a six year contract from when’s he’s 28 to 34 years old. Best value for both sides in his prime. No 1st year goalie gets the big payday after 22 regular season games. 2 season to proves he can play consistently at a top 10-15 goalie rate and the money is all his, I’ll personally drive the brinks truck up for him.
Also do we know if Greene’s bonus’s hit because Lee was put on LTIR? I believe if Lee was hurt before that we should be fine.

I see what you mean but as an isles fan we thought the same about Lee, Nelson, Bailey, and Eberle. I thought Lou was going to burn it down and one season later Eberle and Nelson took less money to stay. It’s funny how hockey works sometimes haha

Buffalos Future from Isles Fan Perspective
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Radu47</b></div><div>Alter the course of the franchise because of a few games? That's oversimplifying but. You're also suggesting the franchise ultimately rebuilds...
For a decade
A literal decade 2013 2023
This may be your 2nd favourite NY team but the Sabres are the heart & soul of many Buffalonians (?) and that's honestly insulting to such passionate fans
I was lucky to witness that passion first hand in 2009
They already have the pieces that any team would want out of a rebuild they just have 15M$ committed to 5 total Skinnposo goals which is why they suck atm
All they need is to be free of that and build properly</div></div>
First of all this is just a fun exercise with a team that will have the most blank cap space in the modern era when cap is one of the hardest things to come by, so their is no disrespect, we all love our hockey teams.
2nd being an Islander fan I would know what it means to lose a top line center that’s considered one of the best in the league. (Tavares)
When he was here we were constantly re-tooling and tire spinning just to make him happy. It was awful here, before 2016 against the panthers I literally wasn’t alive for their previous playoff win in 93’.
When we lost him I thought we were cooked. But “trading” our best player (tavares) for a new culture (Lou and Trotz) was the greatest thing that ever happened to the isles in my lifetime.
We were in a very similar situation to you guys and although Tavares (like Eichel) was a phenomenal player we were better off in a new direction where no one was treated special. (Barzal is reprimanded constantly and is learning every game from Trotz)
We picked up culture guys and took “bad” contracts like Martin, Filpula, Komarov, etc. and made the playoffs with it. A 5 year is one id see working for you is a cup run. You can turn around from the Eichel era the next year and make the playoffs the next year because hockey is weird and unpredictable.

Huge trade to Isles with Lee out
If Buffalo would actually want to take Ladd from the isles I’d rather see a deal go like this:
To Isles:
Taylor Hall (No retention)
To Buffalo
Andrew Ladd
Sebastian Aho
2021 - 1st Rounder
2021 - 2nd Rounder (Col)
2022 - 2nd Rounder (NYI)
An Unretained Taylor Hall, Should probably go for 2 Seconds in this specific market - if you wanna have the 2022 2nd turn into a 2022 first if the Isles re-sign him or win the cup, I’m sure if the isles win the cup we are not going to care and if we re-sign him we are going full send for the next 3 seasons anyway and that first won’t help us in time.
The cost of Ladd is a 1st and a cheap NHL ready defenseman with Offensive Upside (for when you trade RR). Ladd honestly could be on your 3rd or 4th line for the next couple seasons. He hits a lot and can stand in front.

Hall not Palmieri - Please Read Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>Yeah palmeri fits the system and is similiar but not as good as Lee. So say hes 80% of lee. Well hall is 0% Lee and a complete crap shoot. I just dont trust the guy to make a difference.</div></div>
That’s kind of my point though. Palmieri would be an OK stop gap in Lee’s absence, but I can’t imagine the isles doing what they did in the bubble, let alone go further.
I agree Hall is 0% of anders Lee, and that’s kind of the point. With Hall you are creating a new identity to the first line. A little faster and more soft skill line. Which might not be bad for the isles. A bonus is if the faster play style of hall might help Eberle on a per game basis and help bring some stability to his game.
The rest of our team have proved they can be responsible defensively, if the 1st line has to have offensive zone possession to be effective it isn’t the worse thing due to Barzals puck control ability. If they need to be baby sat Pelech and Pullock have been advanced stat heroes this season. I can see the isles doing much worse that trading for Hall.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gortonsfishsticks27</b></div><div>Hall to the isles is a perfect trade this season:

Issue would really be the cost. Isles don't have much of a prospect pool, so they need picks especially first rounders. If isles could do something with the 1 or 2 of the avs picks and one of their defensive prospects (MVS or wotherspoon) it would be ideal. Unfortunately, I see other teams outbidding the isles.</div></div>
I agree that normally I would like to hold on to draft picks but if you were going to spend picks any year on rentals this may be the year. With covid no young players are playing or if they are, they can’t be watch in person. Add that to the fact that Lou is the only GM without an advanced statistics department, he might literally be “Dart Boarding” names on draft night. I also think Lou knows this about himself too and will uses they picks to try to relieve cap for next year and help fill in the LW1 hole left this year.

Hall not Palmieri - Please Read Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny54</b></div><div>Coming from a Sabres fan I think you are including to many pieces for Hall...Bellows and the first should do it. Islanders aren't hurting for cap space with Lee gone for the rest of the season so no need for the Sabres to retain salary thus less going back. Sabres need to rebuild with young players so no need for them to take Kormarov only bc he has a year of contract left after this season.</div></div>
So the main reason I didn’t include bellows is that I believe Lou is going to try everything in his power to keep Bellows as a part of the future core of the Isles when our 29-31 year olds start aging out. I think the isles will be willing to give plenty of picks for hall but to lose a player that most likely would be in our line up for several years for a rental might be to costly. Picks are magic beans (some I feel like the sabers can use) and you could end up with a player just as good even in a later round due to the pandemic. If hall had term and Lou wanted him, absolutely Bellows would be going to Buffalo in a deal.
I do disagree about Uncle Leo though, if your team is going to get younger the next few seasons, Leo honestly isn’t a bad guy to have around them. He helped Barzal and Beauvillier immensely when he got here. Did Lou over pay? Absolutely. Did Lou think we’d be a good team after JT left? No lol Lou expected not to have to worry about the cap for years and we turned around quicker than expected haha
I would also love to see Buffalo turn this around quick to give their fan base a playoff series soon. I think a grizzled team President for Buffalo would do a lot of good.

I think NJD would be a better trade partner for Hickey and Ho Sang. There's no a whole lot of room for them in the Kings lineup.</div></div>
I agree, and during the Summer wanted the Isles and Devils to become trade partners for a lot of reasons. But the way the divisions are and not having Wild Card playoff spots I don’t think we will see very many trades between teams in the same division until the deadline when teams are out of playoff contention.

Realistically the second rounder is the value (Similar to the Mark Stall/Detroit Trade) The only difference is Hickey has two years, but is a lot cheaper and arguably a more useful Dman than Stall at this point of their careers. Ho-Sang is the throw in, because, (A) I want to see him get a chance and I think LA would give him one and (B) he hold more value than a Low around pick because of the skills he does possess.

Tilted with GM
I know a lot of Islander fans don’t like this Zaitsev deal but personally I like it.
The Islanders Core is aging. Nelson, Eberle, Bailey, Lee all reaching 30. I’d take the cap relief now to get offensive help next offseason or at trade deadline. Plus I think Lou likes Zaitsev and with a D-Partner like Mayfield we might be able to see Zaitsev play a little more offensively like he did his first year in Toronto, plus the Trotz structure may help him too. Yes he has a long deal but the extra 4 mil in cap relief can really help next offseason.
And for Ottawa, I don’t think Hickey is cooked, I think he has NHL games left in him and could be a good hardworking veteran presence for a young Ottawa team.
Good luck with Ladd though.

interesting thoughts
Islanders Fan here, not trying to be mean, just want to show you how we value Barzal.
Fair Market Value based on previous trades, age, production would look like:
To MTL:
Mat Barzal
To NYI:
Suzuki
Tatar
1st Rd Pick
2nd Rd Pick
Reasoning: This is Similar to the Pacioretty Trade. The only add on/upgrade being the 1st. Why? He’s Younger and plays center.
Isles are trading their proven Franchise Center for the MTL’s younger (starting to prove Franchise center) but Barzals possession numbers are a unicorn. World class per the analytics community. I LOVE SUZUKI and would want him on my team but He is not going to possess the puck like Barzal does. Barzal is one scoring winger away from Marner like numbers to match his advanced analytics.
This is why trading franchise players just doesn’t quite happen. We love our guys and franchise players get valued as such.
I think MTL will be fine this season the way there roster is. 1 middle pair D-man upgrade and grittier 4th line away from being a team with few weaknesses and possible cup contender. (Being Suzuki and Jesperi step up the way they showed in Toronto)

Boychuk at 3.5-4 mil is really not bad and honestly compares to some of the D at that money. His age is really the only down side because with how hard he plays he gets injured often and really only plays around 60 games a season.

My concern is either still having 4 RHD next season if boychuk stays, and how much it will cost if you have to get rid of both.

Lou-Like Off Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Yes, I can read, but in your original statement you said the Senators saved money by this trade.....well they don't, which was the basis of my disagreement of LTIR nonsense.
So the Sens pay 600,000 for Gaborik and then may want to pay 1m for a 4th line winger....for a total of 1.6.
Now do the Sens want pay 3m for Komarov (minus the 600,000 Gaborik trade). which is a 2.4m cost versus the 1.6m?
Having 4.6m Gaborik with the Sens ups their "cap floor" versus the proposed trade, though I don't think Ottawa will have trouble with the floor regardless.
You're right that might be good value for Komarov...the 2.4m and what he brings to a team...versus the 1.6m option.
Just wonder if Komarov wants to play for a poor team in his last NHL season when he can easily block any trade to a team with cap.</div></div>
I agree, any movement of Gaborik (to anyone) would be determined by how much Ottawa will be forced to spend to ice a hockey team this season. If they are going to reach the cap floor without Gaborik I think they will move him to save the cash. If not they will keep him.
As for komarov going to any non-playoff team, I think komarov is looking to stick around in the league and I can see the Sens wanting him for a cheaper (Martin to the Leafs-esk) contract 2-3 year deal for a low cost/AAV even after this contract expires. Consistent role player that has a good history with teaching youth the right way to be a pro (Marner and Beauvillier).
I love the back and fourth deep nuanced hockey discussion. Just come in a little less hot next time haha.
