Because they have no interest in Kerfoot or Dermott, and Liljegren & a 1st aren't enough for Ekholm & Granlund, even before you factor in retention.

IMO, Dermott + Liljegren + the Leafs' 1st would get you Ekholm at 50% retention.

So, that leaves us then with Kerfoot and Granlund.

Although Kerfoot is a serviceable roster player with term at a cap hit of 3.5 million per year, Granlund is the much better player while Nashville is also retaining on Granlund in your scenario.

That seems to be a tad unfair for Nashville.

If Granlund is traded, Nashville will be more likely looking for picks (maybe a couple of seconds).

While granlund is better than kerfoot I feel like kerfoot is more valuable considering the term on his caphit, Granlund isn't helpful on this years preds team and he could potentially resign next year and they would have both kerfoot and granlund

The way cap and cash is king in the new NHL right now, Kerfoot being signed long term is not a good thing to other teams. Granlund is attractive precisely because hes a UFA.

Nashville doesnt want to have to pay Kerfoot 3.5M just to trade Ekholm (with retention on top of that) and Granlund away. They want cheap assets back only, if possible. I got to think another team will be willing to offer the 1st and two prospects for Ekholm that is being rumoured as well as an added pick for Granlund in another trade if needed.
