Ideas for replacing chiarot internally

Description
Should MTL pursue a trade to try and replace Chiarot or do we have the internal depth? It doesn't help that MTL had a need for another top 4 D before the injury, however ironically the injury could be the opportunity needed for someone within the organization to step into a top 4 role.

Just based off of previous chemistry, there are some options:

Option 1: Romanov
Romanov, he has been the best player on the 3rd pair all season, so logically he is the obvious choice to play a top 4 role. This could leave the 3rd pair weak however, so there are a couple other options.

Option 2: Mete
Mete has worked really well with Weber in the past, he was even playing on the teams top pair Juliens best season here. He can skate real well, and although he is often outmatched size wise he is an underrated defenseman. Weber and Mete are perfect compliments to each other.

Option 3: Kulak
Kulak has had great success whenever he plays with Petry, he looks like a top 4 defenseman. This would slot Edmundson with Weber, who is a pretty similar player to Chiarot maybe even better in some ways.

I personally like the Mete option, because if it works out it would give MTL the best depth as having Romanov on the 3rd pair is re -assuring... I feel like Mete does not work with Romanov or Kulak. I also think Mete is a better defenseman than any of the AHL call ups at this point, although Fluery and Brook would also make sense and could deserve an opportunity.

Sign and place Norlinder in there. According to some Habs fans he's one of your top prospect and worth around a 1st round pick.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not... yes I really like Norlinder but he is under contract with Frolunda where he should be left for two years IMO to develop their.

Mete is -and has always shown- to be better when paired to a bigger physical guy, removing him the duties to clear the front of the net and thus limiting his defensive game to following puck movers behind the goal line and in the corners while the other bigger defender gets net duties. He should be fine if paired with Weber amidst a couple games to get acclimated to his new role, he should be the preferred option internally to replace Chiarot. Let's remember that Rommy is a first year player so no need to rush him up and he played great when paired with Kulak nonetheless the minutes they played per game they looked good when paired.

I agree with this, internally it would make the most sense I believe. I added a poll; which has an option to trade for Ekholm which I also wouldn't be opposed to.

With Chiaror being place on long term IR for the remainder of the season MTL should have cap space to acquire him.

If the Habs don't pull the trigger for Ekholm then I can see Fleury getting a few reps switching out with Mete from time to time based on game play.

Montreal is bad at drafting early anyways so I wouldn't mind sending a 1st with some other things but I'd keep my hands on all those mid/late round picks as this year's literally going to be a guessing game so the most shot you take the best odds you have at finding steals in this draft.

Romanov or Mete. With the way chiarot was playing this year, this may not be that big of a loss

Ouellet is in for Mete tonight, so I mean... maybe Bergevin should have traded Mete when his agent requested it?

Likely right, Ouellet is playing tonight which is not what Bergevin would like ideally I'm sure.

He will probably look to weaponize the cap space from Cgoarot being on LTIR.

Especially in a year where scouting is harder, I would be willing to trade a 1st for sure.

You don't commit to a trade because the other is unhappy and his agent's trying to stir some **** in the media.

Well none of us voted for Kulak with Petry, but it looks like Ducharme has gone with option 3.

I didn't think Edmundson and Petry would be broken up since they have been playing so well together, but Kulak has always played like a legitimate top 4 D when he is with Petry so gotta say this move makes a lot of sense. When Chiarot is healthy they could then roll:

Kulak - Petry
Edmundson - Weber
Chiarot - Romanov

This is actually how I thought MTL's pairings were gonna be to start the year, every year Kulak finishes with Petry and every year MTL acquires someone else to replace him, maybe they should just stick with Kulak?

This is terrible.

You need someone that can take a lot of minutes with Petry. Fail.

You need someone mobile with Weber. Fail.

You need someone reliable with Romanov. Fail.

Kulak with Petry just works, always has I feel like you should know that. If Kulak can't handle the minutes then throw Romanov out there with him for the odd shift.

Not ideal for Weber, but funny how after Chiarot got hurt (even as bad as he was playing this season) that it became clear MTL missed him. Edmundson is a more mobile chiarot, and this was my argument for playing him with Weber to start the season. It's not perfect, but it works until Romanov is ready.

Ouellet is having a fine game and he's the guy in Laval that makes the kids better, paired with Fluery first and then Brook, he is used tk playing eith young guys like Romanov - he will do as a 6th D man when MTL has injuries. When Chiarot is healthy I think he is the perfect guy to play 3rd pairing with Romanov.

Still not against trading for a D, but it is encouraging that MTL doesn't have to panic overpay for someone like Ekholm.

Edit:
Actually come to think of it the Jets would probably pay more for Ekholm anyways lol, they need him more.

Why not Romanov and Weber? I thought that was gonna be a pairing at the start of the season tbh

I though it too. The problem is that coacheS absolutely want to put Weber on the first pairing (more minutes and thougher competition) and Romanov isn't ready for that.

Since the kid isn't ready for 1st pair minutes and coaches dont wan't to waste Weber on a 3rd pairing, we are stuck with Edmundson-Weber instead.

Kulak - Petry works as a 2nd pairing, implying another tandem must take more minutes. IMO, Petry should be the 1st pairing RHD (like you suggested) and Kulak cant follow him up there.

Big Ed could take those minutes. Ducharme acknowledged that and took your pairings, but put Edmundson - Weber on top. This can only work if Weber put his 💩 together and play better than Petry...good luck for that..

It's was been the same problem for 4 years: Find a mobile Dman who can play top minutes with Weber. It's going to be Romanov... Next year...
