laugh laugh shakes head Help Why would Detroit accept that offer for Anthony Mantha? Neal is a cap dump nobody wants, Turris is meh and 31 years old and Neal is 33 years old. We're not moving Mantha for aging players that don't fit our rebuild timeline. Holloway is a nice piece and the 2022 1st round pick is nice but we're not moving Mantha to Edmonton without at least Broberg coming back in return this trade is laugh and not remotely close to getting you Mantha.

It really comes down to would you trade Mantha for Holloway (I don’t currently)? As Turris is worth nothing and the first rounder negates Neal’s negative value. Glendening may return a third at this years TDL but not a ton of value either.

When you factor in that we already have Zadina, Raymond, and Berggren as wing prospects or young roster players does it make sense to add Holloway instead of someone like Broberg?

Your probably going to get some push back on Neal too since most on this site don’t want to pay futures/prospects to unload cap space from underwhelming roster players.

I actually had a 3rd in the trade for that reason. Thought somehow it’d look like too much for Oilers fans so I took it out. Holloway is just as good of a prospect as Broberg, especially if you think he can play center, which he could. Scout and writer Scott Wheeler for The Athletic had top of Oilers prospect pool ranked Bouchard 1, Hollaway 2, and Broberg 3 FWIW. Wings have D prospects coming and probably draft another early this year. Need more forwards, especially ones who can play center. Meanwhile Oilers probably value Broberg more and Holloway could be expendable for them.

I think it’s a fair trade. Maybe only slightly leaning Oilers winning.

I’d challenge you to think harder critically about it. Solid trade for both teams IMO.
For Edmonton: Mantha would score 40 goals per 82 on Oilers playing anywhere in top 6 and PP and having a power forward could take them next level in playoffs. While on Detroit he’s wasting away his prime years not playing with anyone who can feed him pucks. Glendening on an expiring, is a favor to a friend for the playoffs, giving Oil one of the best defensive checking line centers in the league and current league face off percentage leader, upgrading over Turris and giving Glenny chance to chase a cup. They get out of Neal contact.

For Detroit: It’s all about the future. Holloway is a great prospect to get in return, putting up near 2ppg in NCAA at 19, almost a Larkin clone in their direct play style. Also ready to step in and play next season. Wings need more forward talent. 2019 Wings drafted 3 D in first two rounds and in 2020 Wings took 3 more between rounds 2 and 3. They have talented D prospects coming. They’re also potentially in position to draft another top D in Owen Power or Hughes this draft. Broberg is Oilers future on D. Red Wings still have winger talent in Bert, Zadina, Raymond, Berggren. Holloway can play center or wing depending on where Veleno slots in. Wings will also likely draft a top forward 2022. Plus the extra 1st rounder.
The money for Detroit is a non issue for Detroit right now. They have the cap space. Even can buyout Neal if they/he wants. All about the return. Holloway and a 1st rd pick for Mantha is a good return IMO

Value aside and I love Holloway its just doesmt seem like the deal Detroit would or should make. Mantha being moved needs to fix the center or LD problem.

Wings can pick the LD in 2021.. Power, Hughes, Edvinsson. And the center in 2022.. Wright, Lambert, Savoie, McGoarty.

If i'm Yzerman i'd consider a Anthony Mantha for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins swap with Nugent-Hopkins signing a reasonable offer of 7 years $49 million or for Phillip Broberg nothing less. Holloway is nice but not doing Mantha for him.

That first is to take on Neal's albatross of a contract so no Holloway for mantha isn't good value for Detroit

How? Mantha is not that good. He can't play defense and for a guy that's 234 lbs....he's a piece of glass. He's sat out 20+ games 3 of the last 4 years. Can he score? Yes, he can. Is he an elite scorer...not even on his single best day on this planet is he elite. $6M per year for a guy that's a .6ppg player and injury prone is NOT a good contract.

DET has $45M in cap space next year. They can easily take James Neal. DET is once again a terrible team. They NEED picks/prospects more than they need Mantha. People jump on Brandon Saad getting $6M, but at least he knows how to defend. Mantha doesn't know where to stand defensively and doesn't even show effort to try to defend.

Calm down, get your story straight. Mantha is not injury prone. He broke his hand twice fighting. Not out there with soft tissue injuries pulling his hammy and groin all the time. Time will continue to prove he’s not injury prone. $5.7 for 4 years at 26 years old is great value for Mantha’s goal scoring next to McDavid.

Detroit will be losing enough games in 2021 to be picking top 5 in 2022. You can pencil that in. Stevie Y is too smart to screw that up.

But it’s not just Wright in 2022 if we miss out on him. 2022 is loaded and has 4 centers at the top. It’s Wright, Lambert, Savoie and McGoarty. And Slafkovsky. And more.

You are basically saying no other team in the league would offer more than Holloway for mantha which is basically what this trade boils down to. If you believe that you are sadly delusional.

Your misconceptions are the Wings have cap so they will eat crappy contracts for nothing. My god we are in a flat cap era right now, due to Covid, revenues are down. I know the Wings make good profits, per Forbes, but they are not just going to swallow Neal's contract and Turris's contract for 1 st round pick.

You say it is a fair trade, because you unload two contracts that are really bad and you give up a 1st in a down year and a prospect. In turn you also get Mantha and Gelndening, who alot of Wings fans bag on, but he is a very good face off guy and defensive forward.

This is all kinds of bad for Wings and really good for Edmonton.

Mantha is an enigma, but if he can just bring it every game it will help his cause. Just not ready to give him up.
