The TJTwolf and csick trade

Créé par: Richard88

Description
The Ottawa trade was agreed by TJTwolf and csick in another thread.

After making that trade Avs would have $4m+ in capspace so it would make sense to leverage that into a replacement for Graves who can PK well, as well as a backup goalie.

Idk how to judge Nemeth, I think he’s a good defenseman but I don’t watch enough Red Wings game to get an accurate opinion on his play style and overall game.

But I’d still rather Timmins.

Yeah I'm not sure Nemeth would be in ahead of Timmins, but he does fit that 3rd pair LHD PKing role really well and that's ideally what we need on that 3rd pairing. Just someone who can block shots and clear pucks.

Given how depleted the 4th line is I'd even be tempted to go 7D with Timmins and Nemeth both in the lineup.

Looks decent from a Detroit prospect. I’d say Nemeth and Bernier are worth around a 3rd each which is roughly equal to a 2nd + prospect.

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

In that case maybe we'll just trade you a couple of 3rd's instead lol...

Seriously though, I figured that a 2nd and a lesser prospect instead of two 3rd's would be enough to offset the retention. Detroit would need to retain at least $1m to make this work for Colorado.

One of the whole points of the trade was to get a 2nd back into the pot at least dangnabbit!

Seriously though, I'd certainly consider it. Depends if both guys are still anywhere near as solid as they were.

I'm not trying to be mean but Kamenev is a bottom 6 guy that is if he can stay healthy. There is a good chance he doesn't come back to North America to play hockey. You said or another prospect who did you have in mind? A couple of thing to consider Bernier is the only Red Wing goalie to win a game in 15 months. Nemeth is averaging over 20 minutes a game the only 2 skaters averaging more are Larkin and Hronek. So they might not have a whole lot of value to Colorado but they have been pretty important to Detroit so far this season.

Haha, I think the days of the Avs keeping 2nd round picks are long gone. It's pretty clear that Sakic's strategy has been to keep 1st rounders but be much more liberal with 2nd rounders, as he's used 2nd's in trades for Grubauer, Burakovsky, and Toews x2. The 2nd we used on Helleson is the only time we drafted in the 2nd round in the last 3 drafts, and with no 2nd round pick in the 2021 or 2022 drafts that's likely to remain the case for a good while.

Fwiw the two trades combined are effectively:

Donskoi -----------> Tierney
Graves -------------> Nemeth
4th + prospect ---> Bernier

In swapping Donskoi for Tierney we move a forward who doesn't fit this team well, and get a significant upgrade at 3C that allows Compher to move back to the wing.

Graves for Nemeth is a downgrade for sure, but it's at least arguable that Nemeth is a better PKer than Graves, and thus a better fit in that 6D role.

Lastly a 4th and a lesser prospect seems reasonable for a decent backup who can give us some insurance until Francouz is out.

With that said, what this trade does is that it fills the holes we have at 3C and 3G, and arguably gets a Dman who fits the 6D role better, all without creating any other holes in the roster (since Compher replaces Donskoi at 3RW).

And beyond that we'd also be getting a lot of cap flexibility moving forward by moving Graves and Donskoi:

Graves and Donskoi will cost just over $7m combined through to 2023. Bernier and Nemeth are both pending UFA's, so only Tierney's $3.5m contract would impact us until he becomes an UFA in 2022.

So effectively these moves would give us an extra $3.5m in capspace in 2021/22, and $7m in 2022/23. That's a big deal, especially considering that we have Burakovsky and possibly Kadri to resign as UFA's in 2022.

The prospect isn't really meant to be the main piece in the trade, rather the 2nd round pick is.

Detroit could probably get a 3rd or 4th round pick from either Nemeth or Bernier at the deadline, but I'm offering a 2nd here for both which seems reasonable, and then adding a prospect for retention. The quality of the prospect would depend on how much Detroit wants to retain, but it would be someone in the Ranta/Beaucage/Zhuravlyov/Kamenev/Ambrosio/Rolston/Stienburg tier.

Looks good to me. I'm curious if Stevie Y would take a run at Kamenev though. He's not even doing that well in the KHL... 18 GP, 5G, 0A

Kamenev was more of a placeholder in that trade. It's hard to say what prospects might interest another teams GM. It's more tha value that's important there. It could be anyone in that B tier of Avs prospect pool.

Shame that Kamenev isn't taking off in the KHL, but it's at least good that he's playing games and staying healthy, which is a big step forward for him.

Bernier would be nice, graves for tourney doesnt do anything for me... it basically just switches Seattle's focus from graves to tourney

The way jost is playing he could finally become the 3c we always hoped for.. at a third of the price, bowers takes over for bellemare in the interim Sherwood for calvert

I prefer this to the straight up Tierney for Graves trade that I commented on yesterday. I think it's a more balanced trade and works for both teams. Would love to see Ottawa make that deal.

Have the Sens throw in Brown for expansion draft purposes and just skip Nemeth unless there are some injuries. This allows Colorado to keep the second in a good draft too.

Bernier would be nice. This year's third would hopefully do it.

Overall I like it though.

At the TDL I'd have no problem retaining $1.5M on each so $3M total and what about Zhuravlyov?

Zhuravlyov is our only LHD prospect after Byram, so it's not ideal. But I guess if he's the one Detroit want from that tier to get it done then sure.

It's not a deal breaker. What if you dropped the 2nd and the prospect the add Graves and Detroit throws in Cholowski?

So Graves for Nemeth + Bernier + Cholowski (with some retention to make it work)?
