It's clear at this point that Poile wants to give the youth a chance. IF we make any more moves, they likely won't come until near the start of the season or even during the season once we decide where we think Tovly/Kunin/Tomasino/Trenin fit in. It looks like they are all going to get a shot (even Pitlick/Olivier/McCarron's names have been thrown out there). The only way I see him making a move earlier than that is if there is a really enticing deal with a cash strapped team like Vegas/Tampa (and don't forget about the Blues). With all that said, let's tackle some of the moves people are proposing and why they won't happen (yet).

1) Hoffman - If he was going to sign here he probably would have by now unless we are really low balling him. Poile has already mentioned both Tolvy and Kunin as guys that can fill spots on the 2nd line. If we do sign him, it will likely be because we decide either Kunin/Tolvy aren't going to cut it on the 2nd line during training camp. Also, he had bad chemistry with Duchy in Ottawa, just sayin.

2) Duclair - Same as above but to an even greater extent. If we want an offense-only player that is a proven scorer we should sign Hoffman. The only way I see this happening is if Hoffman signs elsewhere but we decide Tolvy/Kunin/Tomasino aren't ready for the 2nd line and we get really desperate AND we get him on the cheap. Heck, I'd rather have Jarny on the 2nd line than Duclair so I really don't see this happening.

3) Soderberg - This makes no sense at all. Cousins/Richardson were signed to play the same role (though they are slightly worse). Sissons is also a similar player. This is a very redundant move.

4) Haula - Essentially the same reasons as Soderberg except Haula is more offensive. Sissons/Kunin/Jarny are all guys that could provide offense on the 3rd line so we don't need to go sign someone else.

5) Barzal (and essentially any other >$6M offer sheet) - Offer sheeting a guy like Barzal/Cirelli/Dubois doesn't really fix all your problems and gives up some valuable draft picks in a retool year where those could be lottery picks. If it were next season and we let Joey/Duchy get taken in the expansion draft then it would maybe make sense, but paying 3 centers >$25M would be very, very bad. At the end of the day I don't see Poile making a big splash like this when there are a lot of sneaky good deals to be made with cash strapped teams. Our biggest needs are some stud wingers that can elevate the play of Duchene (or Joey).
