Due to cap reasons likely, however they win the trade. Marner is just better than Laine and Dermott is a little behind Pionk but will be just as good I think.

The only reason there are exploring a Laine trade is worrying what is next deal might look like, Marner is a great player but he’s still massively over paid bring his value down if the leafs ever look at moving him and in the flat cap for at least the next 3 yrs return would be underwhelming as no team has that cap space and teams like Ottawa and Detroit aren’t going to give up the futures to acquire him

Jets concerns are paying Laine , Marner has been paid (40% of his entire contract) a Marner Laine swap saves the Jets a significant amount of hard cash while getting the better player

It’s still a flat cap world
I should rephrase their worried about his cap # long term Marners cap hit would still be north of 3 mil on what Laine gets in the flat cap world

I would do Laine for Marner straight up. Marner is better, but his cap hit brings down his value so it would probably be pretty even. I know most was bonus that has been paid, but still limits future signings and moves.
Getting Marner would alleviate the need for a playdriving 2C as Marner could be the playdriver on that line.
Now, Pionk is miles ahead of Dermott. Dermott never really wowed me, and reminds me a bit of Niku. Both did remarkably well in the AHL but haven’t really been able to translate that success in the Nhl. Does he have potential? Sure, but we have tons of LHD and need to keep the few righties we do have.

I don't know if Winnipeg takes that trade or not, but Dermott is miles behind Pionk. I don't think the Leafs should do that deal because you have left them with almost no cap space to resign anybody next year. Both Pionk and Laine would need new deals, and so would Freddie and Hyman, with Rielly coming up the year after.

Toronto has cost certainty from their big 4. They can plan to add around the edges because they know what the middle will cost. Adding unknowns into that equation to save a bit of money now to land Pietrangelo I think is the wrong strategy. It's creative on your part, but I don't think that deal helps Toronto enough. Winnipeg also has no other RHD so I doubt they would trade Pionk without getting someone else in return (which was their issue with the Trouba trade).

Right now, Marner is owed about $35 million for 5 years. A player of his caliber at $7 million AAV is great value. If Bryan Little is going to be on LTIR from here on out, Marner's cap hit won't be a problem.

Laine QO next season is 7.5 just to Qualify him - this is a guy who scores 30 in a bad year - he will receive 9-10 per year on his contract

Nah, that is just what pundits say to fuel the conversation among the fan base and hate group of the most popular team in the league. In reality, and elite superstar right winger who is likely top 5 at his position and just 23 isn't overpaid, definitely not massively overpaid. Laine's next deal will be a lot but he's also a top 10 goal scorer in the league. Moving him to save money is hilarious stupid. Maybe don't give big money to old guys and little and you wouldn't care much.

It's the most loved and hated team in the league - thus making them very very popular it's why there is a massive amount of Leaf AGMs each day (they have a very very large fan base) it's why when ever they play road games anywhere in Canada the home team house is over 50% blue and white - so yes it's a completely fair statement to say TO is the most popular team and yet the most hated team in the league - Bruins are up there for hated as well (mostly cause the Leafs can't beat them in the playoffs)
