Description
Islanders can't afford Pulock/Toews/Barzal and likely won't move enough cap to get all 3 locked up. Lou definitely values Pulock the most and won't move him and probably won't want to give Barzal more money than Lee who is captain.
Toews could be moved since there's already a few NHL level d-men and Andy Greene might get an extension at the minimum. Danault is a quality 2C and would fit with the Islanders style so the move does make some sense.
Buffalo has a clear hole at the 2C and Domi could return to 60 point form next to Skinner. Domi is still only 25 so his best years could still easilly be ahead of him. The Hickey trade to Detroit just addresses Detroit's severe lack of d-men with a capable enough player who isn't taking up too much cap space. Regardless, Detroit get's a free late round pick for taking on a contract which won't effect them and may prove to be valuable if Hickey rebounds.
No other big changes/FA signings made as the Habs have a solid prospect system and some younger players ready to step up (Suzuki, Romanov, KK)

Kiefer Bellows isn't great and probably won't cap off as much more than a bottom 6 power forward. Hickey is a straight cap dump and Lou would much rather have the tangible asset of Danault rather than some draft picks via offer sheet. The 16th overall in this draft could be comparable to a top 10 in most other drafts due to the depth and Danault himself is a solid 2C who is elite defenisvely with 50+ point upside. I don't think it's ridiculous ask. Barzal is probably a 1C, but he's definitely on the low end of that considering his drop in production since Tavares left. He's still young so he can defintiely get better, but I don't see him being much more valuable than say Duchene who was traded for a first, a B+ (at best) prospect, a 2C, a cap dump, and a third.

A second that is early 30s is practically a first. I imagine Domi is mostly on the outs with the Habs and not many teams are gonna meet his demands with the flat cap. Buffalo is defintiely getting a deal with this trade. Might be 2 2nds rather than a 2nd and 4th but I'm honestly not too sure how to value Domi right now. I do think he gets traded though

That return doesn't get you Barzal alone nevermind adding Bellows and a pick.

Could easily get more for Domi then that.

Agreed it will be hard for teams to meet Domi's demands, that is why I see him sticking with Montreal for another year on a 1 year "show me" contract, and then gets traded at the deadline next season... and although I find it equally as hard to value Domi rn, he is assuredly going to fetch a 1st rounder minimum if that is what Kapanen got and then some.

The thing with Kapanen is most people agree it was a clear overpayment, but his contract is pretty good and he'd be a year younger than Domi, if that makes a difference. Based on the fact Domi hired Ferris and fired his previous agent who was buddies with Bergevine, I think his time in Montreal is up or he's gonna be asking way too much with term from them. That's just my opinion, I could be totally off but that's how I've interpreted it

not an islander or a hab fan, that offer isnt close for barzel. Youre in the wrong ballpark.

He's a great playmaker, good skating, great vision, smooth hands. He's not an elite defender by any means and hasn't shown he is actually a legit, true #1C. He's only 22 so you're paying for upside but if the Islanders can't sign him, Lou will want to replace him with someone who will fit in with the team (Danault). I'm curious how much more you think the Habs would have to pay for him while taking on a cap dump

Both Barzal & Domi cost more. Detroit isn’t taking Hickey for a late round pick upgrade. The problem with Detroit’s defense is they have enough bottom pairing/press box guys but lack quality top 4 guys outside Hronek.

Barzal is the best transition player in the NHL, top 3 in offensive zone time, #1 for zone entries and in the 99th percentile for assists/60. He leads or is in top 5 in enough categories where he is definitely a #1 caliber center. Just because he’s not elite defensively doesn’t mean he’s not a 1C. Mark Scheifele is one of the worst defensive centers in the league and he’s an elite 1C.

Barzal is priority #1, they won’t have problem signing him.

If Hickey doesn't play half the season, Detroit gets a 5th this year for taking $2.5M in meaningless cap space that they can easilly afford. If he does play, I think upgrading a future pick is worth it. Hickey is also due a $1.25M bonus this year, so if Montreal waits until FA to make the move, it could make sense. To be fair, there was many reasons why Hickey didn't play this reason than just poor play. He's probably a bottom pair guy but dealt with injuries, Toews/Dobson getting spots, and the death of his brother. I think it's a low risk trade for detroit and at best they could flip him the year after for a 4th or 3rd. At worst, he does nothing and gets buried.

Hickey is 2.5x2 years for a bottom pairing quality player at best in which we already have Nemeth for and then Cholowski on call up. We’d also have Biega in press box. The addition is pointless to upgrade a late round pick one round as it holds very little value. If Detroit is going to go after cap dumps then it would be for more premier picks or prospects. We’ve already seen cap dumps this offseason with max retention and dump for dump to establish a baseline.
