Dead cap space for 2020/2021 about 13 million. Buying out Hank this year, the Rangers can sign Lemieux and Georgiev with the scraps. 2021/2022 the dead cap space would go to 5.5 million.
Chances the King will get his name on the cup with the Rangers in the 20/21 season are slim to none. The Kings #30 Rangers sweater will be retired at MSG and he will be in the NHL hall of fame one day.

smith isn't totally useless. can kill penalties, stands up for teammates, can play forward and defense. he isn't very good anymore but he is still serviceable. someone will sign him when he becomes a ufa.

Sure. That doesn't mean the Kings are going to take his bad contract for anything less than a 1st. If he was on a $1M contract, I'm sure he might have some takers.

a 1st is to much to pay from a non-contender team. smith is owed 2.3 mill after his bonus. 2.3 mill for a 4.3 mill cap hit isn't worth a lottery pick. carolina paid almost double with over 6 mill cap hit for a 1st they thought was going to be in the mid to late 20's.

i dont think the team should trade him as well. smith is still better than both players you named. sending him to hartford doesnt save the team cap. they are better off just playing the season out with him unless someone earns the spot over him. just scratch him every night. he can play forward and defense, he isn't a terrible option 1 game here and there.

kevin klein retired with 1 year left on his contract. klein was good until his last season. he had no legs left.
