Description
Not an original thought in any of these trades, so many thanks to those of you who planted the seeds and absorbed the wrath of the critics.

EDMONTON -- Oilers get a bonafide scorer who can play any forward position on any top-3 line, while Habs get a very good LD. Habs get Puljujarvi (whose NHL abilities remain unproven) for a very solid 2nd-round centreman who is being crowded out in Montreal's prospect pool. Perhaps Montreal could offer a conditional pick in 2022 that reflects Puljujarvi's success in the NHL.

VEGAS -- Vegas gets desperately needed cap relief in return for two young Quebec forwards.

DETROIT -- Habs get an excellent homegrown power forward who has stayed rooted in Montreal; Wings get much-needed help on the blue line, a promising two-way C/LW and the 16th pick overall.

CAP QUESTIONS: Even though the model shows the Habs are slightly above the cap ($400k) they won't have a problem being cap compliant this year. Looking ahead, with Caufield and Ylonen pressing up, Tatar will likely be allowed to go UFA and Byron would be taken in the expansion. That $8M would be spread between Gallagher, Danault and Petry. KK would need a short bridge. In 2022-23, assuming he's not taken in the expansion draft, Fleury would retire and be replaced on the roster by Primeau, opening up roughly $6M.

Agreed. They were early signings, when I was still rolling in cap space. In fairness, I badly underpaid Mantha, so I'd still be way over. I think I'd dump the Puljujarvi idea and use that extra $1M to better the offer to Mantha.

As much as I like Mantha, he's not going to fetch you 5 pieces. You don't really need/want Domi. Primeau would a possibility. Perhaps one of Harris, Brook or Norlinder makes more sense for the D-corps that really only has MacIsaac and Seider in the pipeline. Maybe there's a way to do a sign-and-trade that would keep some of Mantha's cap with the Wings for a few years. That would make a 4-for-1 or 5-for-1 possible.

So you want the Wings to retain and still trade you Mantha, that would cost you more. Poehling has shown nothing thos last year, Mete is a 5 or 6rh defenseman and your pick is 16th. All of this and you want Wings to retain.

That is a HELL NO.

You say he is not worth that then why in the hell is every Hab fan trying to trade for him?

I have seen he is big power forward, so why would Wings give that up?

This is a bad offer, Mete isn’t a worth much and Poehling hasn’t shown anything outside his NHL debut. Wing defense prospects excluding (Hronek, Lindstrom) include with an okay shot at being NHL regulars Seider, Cholowski, McIsaac, Tuomisto, and Johansson. Like we’ve hashed our multiple times, Detroit doesn’t want to sell Mantha as he’s our best offensive player and hasn’t played a full season due to fighting so he’s perceived value is lower. Over his last 82 games he’s posted 30G and 42A so would you trade a young power forward that is his prime for 16OVR and 2 ehhh prospects?

No, I said that by retaining, the value of Mantha could climb to 4 or 5 pieces (like Primeau, Harris, Struble).

As for Poehling, there's not a scouting/prospect ratings service that doesn't have him slated anywhere from solid NHL prospect to Top 100. My fear is, as a Trump-endorsing American, he will tire of Canada's left-leaning sensibilities and won't thrive here. In short, I'd like him to go home before we wreck him.

As for why are Habs fans interested and I would say that were Mantha's name MacDonald and he were from Hamilton, there wouldn't be this degree of interest. The fact that he's a Francophone and has maintained his home in Quebec means a lot to a market that is starved for a hometown hero.

I won't disagree that Detroit could do better, but I doubt it would be MUCH better. Given that the Penguins got Kapanen (with 2 years on a cheap contract) and two depth pieces for the #15 pick, that's an indication that the #16 pick is worth a pretty solid player. Poehling is still rated highly by the prospect sites, including being #44 on the THN's Future Watch, which is ahead of Veleno, Rasmussen and Berggren. And, while he's probably not the second coming of Torey Krug, Victor Mete already has 171 NHL games under his belt and he just turned 22 in June.

So would Mantha warrant a bit more? Arguably yes. But the three pieces offered -- a ready-to-go player, a prospect and a top pick -- is still a pretty good haul

Since we'd be dumping Alzner, think of it more as $14M Confused . The Habs have an interesting problem in that they have to get another goalie under contract to make available for the expansion draft. Vegas has Dansk and Logan Thompson, so they're covered on that front. Having seen what a rested Price can do, the Habs need to find someone who can carry 30+ games and who might relish the idea of being a hometown hero for a couple of years.

That's true, we do need to have an unprotected goalie. Didn't think about that.
