Tampa saves 1.75mil to downgrade at 1C, and also picks up Valimaki (a top LD prospect still on his ELC) and a 1st to replenish their prospect pool. 1.75mil means they can lock up Cirelli long term and keep Cernak while only having to trade two of their ~5mil wingers. Valimaki is still on an ELC and allows them to trade Sergachev for a whole lotta stuff, he probably has a similar ceiling but he's cheaper now. He'll be on their 3rd pair next year but has top pair potential, he likely passes McDonagh for the 2LD role inside 2-3 seasons. I'll make how this works more clear in a Tampa ACGM that I'll post not long after this but I think it might be an acceptable deal for Tampa to keep 2 of their 3 big RFAs, only lose two of their supporting pieces, and all they have to do is downgrade a bit at 1C, and they replenish their prospect pool with some incredible parts to boot. Otherwise they're extremely susceptible to offer sheets and potentially lose more than 3 pieces anyway. If they bridge everyone that's another conundrum, as then they collapse in 2-3 years, but they won't have recovered assets for some of their UFAs, meaning they have less prospects ready to jump in and fill the void (and there's no getting out of paying big money to those players at that time). For Calgary it obviously makes sense, Point is an upgrade at 1C and Johnny would make Point a legitimate 45+ goal guy consistently. Losing Valimaki and a 1st hurts, but their window is open now and it's worth the risk.
Tuch I feel is wasted on the 3rd line. Mangiapane is capable of being a top 6 guy for sure, but he'll fit in fine on Vegas's third line and he'll come cheaper. Tuch is better now so Vegas gets a solid 4th line PK guy who still has solid upside despite kinda falling out of favour in Calgary, and a pick as well. Willing to discuss upgrading this pick.
DeMelo is a good defensive guy to fill out the top 4, and Lehner is the gamebreaking starter they need. TVR s depth, Calgary resigns some of their own depth. I wanted to keep Gus but it just doesn't make sense to given their cap situation after adding cap via the trade acquisitions. You can only afford to keep him if he agrees to sign for 1.6mil or less (likely on a 1 year deal) but I feel like he's more likely to make 2-3mil for 2-3 years.
Ryan's a cap casualty here but he's a reliable, penalty killing, bottom 6 centre. He's probably worth a 3rd or 4th+7th to some team. Buffalo obviously needs a 2C but they could use some stability in the bottom 6 too lol, they're mostly just a placeholder though, Ryan could go anywhere.
Rittich is a solid 1A/1B platoon goalie. I reckon he could fetch a 2nd, I put 3rd as lowball. I love Big Save Dave but cap again. I have him going to Nashville because they'll need a platoon guy if Rinne retires, but he could go anywhere (Carolina maybe?), this is just a placeholder. They flip the EDM conditional 3rd to Ottawa for Nilsson at half retained to be a cheap, solid backup to Lehner.
Overall this adds some punch to the Flames, improving their top 6 dramatically (especially at 1C), and giving them plenty of options for threatening line combinations (Rieder in the top 6 was all they could do to shake up the team in the playoffs and while he's fast, the skill isn't there to be a top 6 contributor). They also add a bona fide starting goalie for the first time since Kipper. Their defense is worse after losing Gustafsson, Brodie, Hamonic, and Forbort, but DeMelo is a reliable guy and a solid add to the top 4. Andersson and Hanifin should continue to develop. Overall I think this is a significant improvement to the current Flames team and would like to see them pursue some aggressive moves like this. I think it's somewhat realistic given the cap situations of the other teams involved, specifically Tampa may be willing to part with Point for Monahan if it keeps the rest of their team intact. Vegas might prefer to trade Tuch for a RHD, but Mangiapane gives them a cheap, young forward who can step up into the top 6 if they run into more cap trouble in future years and have to part with someone else, and they can use that extra cap room to go after a RHD in free agency (Gudas, Hamonic, Braun, etc.).
I suppose I should end by saying that if that's not enough for Point (but 1st+elite prospect+1C+3rd being used for cap relief is a pretty solid package) I'd be willing to add another asset or two, like Phillips, Zavgorodny, or another good pick. Same for Tuch to a lesser extent. I just think Tampa can be exploited for mutual benefit here (what a strange but somehow accurate phrase lol) and it's time for Calgary to go all in before they age out.
I like the idea and believe it is possible, I do however think it takes more than a 3rd rnd pick to convince Ottawa to spend 3.9 million over 3 seasons

Dumping a ~4mil contract has generally been agreed upon as a 3rd (e.g. the popular Smith+3rd for 6th deal) but given it's a set price that can't be traded on or bought out, I could see a little extra incentive being needed. I guess see how much Calgary's 3rd buys and Tampa can add a later pick if they need more room.
I'd be surprised if Rinne retires, but I could see Rittich going to DET to replace Howard. They're not in a place where it makes sense to invest heavily in a goalie yet, and they don't look like they have any prospects ready to move up. He's young enough that they could extend him if it's a good fit, and easy enough to walk away from or move at the deadline if it isn't.
That is a steep price for Point but I think you are on the right track. Would rather give up the 2021 1st instead of Valimaki as Gio is on his last legs and he is going to really open eyes next year when he finally plays a full season
This is very well thought-out and I think it fills a lot of needs for the team. I have a couple small quibbles, but the idea of getting a dynamic 1C to play with Gaudreau is bang on. Good work.
