Does this really help them tho?
They're losing a 1B in net, Pateryn is a slight upgrade at RD. They are losing a good prospect, another pick and their only servicable LD in the system with Riikola.
The Pens can't spend the extra cap either due to the cut in payroll
Pit can replace Murray in-house for cheaper than Murray will be with DeSmith.
Riikola has a cool name, but he has no value to MN.
JJ is a cap dump with a $2m+ net gain for PIT, plus they upgrade slightly with better d-man in Pateryn.
The prospect MN would have wanted PIT just sent to TOR (awful trade). MN has equal or better FWD prospects already in their system compared to Légaré.
This is bad business taking on $5m+ total cap for:
-a lateral move in net (with the possibility of Murray rebounding).
-A downgrade at RD with more term
-A couple of prospects that don't really do anything.
If you want to make some cap room do the Pateryn for Bjugstad trade that's floating around. At least it makes some sense for both teams. But with the way JR has been trading PIT probably throws in their 2nd next season.
