Gallagher and How to Win the Expansion Draft

Créé par: UpsideDownQue
Équipe: 2021-22 Avalanche du Colorado
Date de création initiale: 18 août 2020
Publié: 18 août 2020
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Its hard to predict contracts 2 years in the future but I did my best

Gallagher would probably make more $$$ tbh but lets just hope he is willing to take a discount to get a better shot at the cup

How to Win the Expansion Draft:

Protection List:
MacKinnon
Rantanen
Landeskog
Kadri
Burakovsky
Nichushkin
Compher

Makar
Girard
Graves (EJ waives NMC)

Francouz (Grubauer waits until July 1st before signing to avoid being selected)

Notable Unprotected Players: Jost, Donskoi, EJ
Notable Exemptions: Byram, Newhook, Timmins, Kaut, Bowers, Annunen, Peterka (2020 1st rounder), Huckins (2021 1st rounder)

Minimum Exposure Requirements:
2 forwards under contract for 21-22 who have played in 40+ games last season: Jost and Donskoi
1 defenseman under contract for 21-22 who played in 40+ games last season: EJ
1 goalie who is an RFA or is under contract for 21-22: Theres no games played requirements so just grab any random goalie and sign him to league minimum to expose him to Seattle

Colorado gives Seattle a 3rd to ensure they select Donskoi (just to be safe, but they probably would have taken him anyway over Jost and EJ)

Waiting to sign until after the draft doesn't do what you think it does. If Grubauer is left unsigned and unprotected, I think Seattle would still take him. They could then negotiate an extension with him prior to him hitting the open market.

yeah they could take him, but if that happens Grubauer could also just not sign with them and wait until July 1st

I don't think Gally would leave the Habs in free agency for that much. They easily have the cap space to match 6.5

yeah fair enough, I put in the description that he is probably worth more. Im just assuming that he may take a discount to get a better shot at a cup

True. Colorado needs to be ready and willing to make Francouz the starter. If they are, then this is a decent option. If not, then they need to protect Grubauer.

I would argue that would probably be the case with every other position beside goalies, and if I recall s Vegas got to speak to teams pending ufas first and if signed that counted as the teams selection, if they protected Frankie and Seattle
doesn’t sign grubi before he hits ufa. They wouldn’t circle back on a goalie since their plans at that position would probably be all solidified though the draft

But you do need 3 goalies to be signed to nhl deals to be draft compliant, as it is right. Is they would need grubi or another goalie under contract

    agreed.
I still cant get behind alot of this dumb "EJ does COL a favour", "Sakic asks EJ to help him out", "EJ would be smart to waive and Sakic would do him a solid for it" crap.
Not only is EJ not waving, why on earth would Grubauer than jeopardize his financial security by doing some, dont sign now, sign later BS lol

COL fans need to get it in their head that they cant get their way everytime! EJ isnt doing favours, Grubauer isnt doing secret July 1 signing deals.

To make the team better. Sakic can tell him that he will give up picks to Seattle so they wont pick him (in this scenario its a 3rd, but could be more if needed). He will still be 'protected' in that sense but he wouldnt officially be on the protection list. At his age I doubt Seattle would want to select him anyway

There was a 0% chance Vegas was going to take Phaneuf from Ottawa in the last expansion draft and he didn't waive. I really really doubt EJ does the Avs a favour when they're essentially saying "no one wants you anyways, just do us a favour"

If Colorado doesn't want to lose Graves they can offer picks/prospects to Seattle not to take him and EJ doesn't have to do anything for anyone.

Interesting idea considering my pic lol.
I think you've low-balled Graves by $1M. Colorado should find a way to get rid of Johnson's 6M cap hit by 2021.
I highly doubt Gallagher ever makes it to UFA. I've also never seen a contract like that Timmins one. I think he needs more than 1 x 1, no? If he doesn't play this season maybe. But if he even plays I imagine 2x 2 or 2M x 3 years
