Description
Obviously RHD is the position Toronto wants to Improve on. Columbus was reportedly high on Marner last season when he was an RFA. With Marner, Columbus gets an offensive weapon they need who plays penalty kill as well. They also get Dermott who could blossom to a solid top 4 for years to come. You also get Bracco who hasn't had an opportunity with the leafs but was at one time considered a very good prospect for Toronto who may thrive given an opportunity in Columbus...a bit of a gamble. Toronto gets the #1 RHD d man they're looking for as well as a veteran presence for their bottom 6 forward group. RHD is at a premium and one of the best in the league in his prime will not cost cheap. All in all, I highly doubt Columbus ever considers trading Jones (unless he's thinking about testing free agency) and also I highly doubt Toronto trades Marner (if there's one player I believe has the best chance to stay a Leaf for his career on the roster, it's Marner).

NO.... Columbus isn’t trading Jones for Marner. We can’t afford Marners contract and when Savard leaves as a UFA Columbus won’t have a top 4 RHD.

And Edmonton isn’t trading Jones for Johnsson. We also don’t have the cap, and that’s too much to give for him.

As good as he is, Marner's contract is immovable.

Columbus reportedly offered Marner and offersheet, so apparently they were willing to pay him big money. But let's just go with no one wants a 90+ point player because it's smarter to pay 3 guys the same amount to watch them all score 30 points.

Gaudreau for Marner straight up. TOR gets the cap savings. And gets much worse.

Let's do it.

There is no deal that TOR and CLB could strike that sees Jones leaving CLB...Jones is 50% the cap hit of Marner...and even if TOR could afford to split the difference by retaining salary on Marner, Jones is far more valuable. We're talking about a Top 5 RD in the entire league here...in his prime...at a $5.4M cap hit...and with a NTC.

Would need to get really, really creative with a third team involved to somehow make it work. Even then, the price for Jones is astronomical.

Offersheet is different. Trading your best player for him is something else. Columbus would have to move someone else to make the cap work and now we’re down Jones and that other player for Marner at the very least and for a team built on defence trading their best defenseman for a wing isn’t a good option. Would I pay 4 1sts and no signs Nyqvist for Marner 100%. Would I trade Jones+ for Marner not a chance. Columbus adds Marner to the roster those 1sts are early 20s, we move Jones for Marner and Columbus is really not much better Or even better at all then they are now if PLD is the other player who leaves via an offersheet that MTL keeps threatening.

You offence is a problem, having a 90 point player makes you a better team. Even at the cost of Jones. You do have good depth on D. That is clear.

If you mean 3rd pair players or a constantly injured Murray sure. This also means we probably have to lose both Savard and Murray to make the 11 mil contract work.

You’re right offense is the issue, but there’s other ways to fix that that don’t give your roster a crippling whole, because Savard and Jones are the only 2 RHD we have and Peeke is the only one who’s top 4 rated prospect. I’ve come to realize that Columbus d strength is on the left side, we have a good, but very limited right side, we can’t afford to move one for a wing. Maybe for a center, but not a wing.

There's literally nothing the Leafs have that makes giving up Jones worthwhile. (Well, maybe Matthews would do, although we'd be in contract trouble as a result).

If you'd like those four 1sts in exchange for Marner, though (replicating the offersheet scenario), then let's talk.

Depends on what the GM is going to be facing pressure wise. If you can't score enough to win, that's going to put heat under management.
