What if that trade actually happened

Description
In the weeks leading up to the Weber vs Subban trade, a lot of rumors sent Subban to Edm. We learned the details afterwards and at the time some people tought it wasn't enough for Subban, but today it would feel like an absolute steal. There are different versions involving Nurse or Larsson but I'll go with the one that I saw and thought might be the least ridiculous one.

Subban and a 2016 3rd for Draisaitl, Yakupov and 2016 4th OA pick. (LOL)

Couple of rules;

I kept all trades Bergevin made afterwards except the Sergachev one. Now that Subban is gone and you don't have Weber, you'll need the kid.

I made different draft picks resulting from my needs after that huge trade.

2016:
#4 Matthew Tkachuk (okay it's a pick based on what we know now, sue me)
#9 Sergachev

2017:
Same picks, I won't go into the value of selecting different players outside the Top 10

2018:
Probably not Kotkaniemi because they're not so desperate for a Center now, so maybe take Quinn Hughues, but I'll go with the Tkachuk connection.
#3 Brady Tkachuk

2019:
#15 Cole Caufield

Let's see what the Habs might've looked like today.

Results: Habs now have 4M Cap Space and Sergachev and Domi to resign. Plus our RD looks pretty weak... Other than that, that's a solid Top 9.

I agree. Other version would be: Taking Quinn Hughes at 3rd OA and putting him RD.

How was that ever a rumor? Draisaitl was worth alot more than Subban even back then. If you don't share a source I'm going to go ahead and live in disbelief of your theory

No chance Montreal selects Hugues because it's knowon that Timmins didn't think he could perform in the NHL (He tagged him as a bust from the get go).

Also it's known that one reason why the trade fell off the tracks was that Montreal wanted to select PLD fourth overall but thanks to Colombus that didn't go well. Now with hindsight Montreal would've most likely went out and pick a RD or trade for one at one point.

It has been plastered in every media in Montreal and just by the fact that Chiarelli was still in charge back then should kill any doubts you might have and to be fair Subban back then was looking like the next big thing (Like superstar level).

No I don't think so. Chiarelli drafted Draisaitl and knew his potential and as bad of a GM as he was, he wasn't THAT bad. Subban wasn't ever the next big thing to anyone but Montreal fans. He was traded in a one for one for an older #1 D, not exactly the return for a "superstar level" D. The return Nashville got for him is more of what his value has always been floating around

Fun exercise for sure. Imagine how much this would’ve screwed the Oilers lol....

One issue: I think the Habs would take Puljujarvi. He was close to consensus #3 and I don’t think that the Habs would pass up on him at 4. Besides, seeing how they handled KK this season, I feel like Montreal could’ve developed him better and maybe he’d be a top-6 winger by now with them, potentially negating the appeal of Tkachuk.

the trade with subban was subban and the 9th overall pick for draisaitl and the 3rd. the reason was so the habs could select Pierre luc Dubois. so in reality we would not still have sergachev. and our centers would be Draisaitl PLD the danault.

Probably Mete never played on this team at 20-21 years old, because if Sergachev was there they'll never forced Mete on the left side and he will had chance to have a camp along Weber.
Probably they'll have trade for a RHD or draft a RHD in 2017.

The rumour was Draisaitl and 4th for Subban and 9th, but Edmonton didn’t want to do it because they didn’t want to trade Draisaitl. Also they were thinking of selecting Sergachev anyways before they found out that Puljujärvi would be available at 4, so they would lose nothing by moving down to 9. Plus MTL wanted PLD, so they wouldn’t have cared about trading up if he wasn’t available at 4.

I was about to say, this would NEVER have been a possibility.

Thats more like it.

Granted that it would still be dope for the Canadiens, but much more realistic than that original bull

Yeah. Not like it was even close to happening, since there was no point where Edmonton ever was willing to trade Draisaitl, plus CBJ taking PLD at 3 completely changed what trading from 9th to 4th would mean.

Hey everyone I’m trying to see if I can somehow replicate this and see how it could go if this trade ever happened. However I eventually find myself stumped. So the trade: Subban and a 3rd to EDM for Draisaitl, Yakupov and 4th OA pick. Now the only way the trade was gonna happen is if PLD dropped out of the top 3. So in this universe I’m imagining CBJ take Puljujarvi, and the Habs take PLD at 4. I’m also imagining that Sergachev for Drouin trade never would’ve happened due to us no longer needing centers. However, this would put Tampa in a tighter cap situation than they’re already in. Adding Drouin’s $5.5M cap hit to the Lightning’s cap space, they’d be over by (I’d imagine) roughly 4-5 million dollars. So some other trade would have to happen. I was thinking a trade like the one that actually happened, a highly touted D prospect for Drouin. Can anyone give me ideas how to make this work in NHL 20? Thanks
