thats a very good move for them. Holl is okay but he needs to be with muzzin to achieve anything and since signing that 2mill contract he started to play poorly plus muzzin wasnt there to help. Kerfoot is okay but leafs will be looking for a new 3c cause at 3.5mill and those numbers yeah that wont cut it for this team especially with the cap not going up. Josh anderson was injured this year so his numbers were down, and Savard is the best option when it comes to a defensive RHD, and should not be to expensive to resign.
By moving Holl the leafs can keep dermott and have
Rielly-Savard
Muzzin-Dermott
Sandin-Lehtonen
What are you basing the fact that Holl played poorly after he signed the extension on? From the time of signing, his point pace and advanced stats remained somewhat similar to what they were beforehand, and this was with their two top D (one of which is Muzzin, his regular partner who he supposedly can't be good without) missing significant time. Holl actually outperformed Savard this year.
The Leafs might look for a new 3C, we have no way of knowing. That justification is pretty frail, though. The cost for Kerfoot is fine and it's quite clear he had a down year and is likely to bounce back next season. With this trade though, their search for a 3C is pretty limited because the cap stays nearly even. Even if we assume the Leafs are able to trade Johnsson for no cap back, they have less than $700k to work with to find a new 3C, so you're looking at trading out other players whether that be just to clear cap to sign someone or trade directly for a C.
I'd gladly add either of those players, but a deal where the Leafs lose two longer term guys just doesn't make sense.
