From the Philly Perspective, its possible....

JVR makes a mil more, is one year younger and is a pretty safe bet in terms of production, but Johnson as RD with Braun as a UFA is not a bad idea.

The difficulty lies in Johnson's age/salary and whether it fits Philly. Philly has Niskanen and Myers at RD, so paying a 3rd pairing RD 6mil might not work. I like the idea of moving JVR and getting a solid return in an area of need, just not sure its Johnson at 6mil, (especially given the amount of UFA RD available).

I think it's solid for both sides. JVR is constant in terms of production and so is Johnson defensively. Niskanen is a UFA at the end of next season and Braun at the end of this season. JVR's cap hit is high and there's no way PHI trades him without getting a similar cap hit in return since the cap is probably staying flat.

Oh, I certainly agree with the reasoning, but PHI has a relatively young defense with plenty of prospects, (Zamula, Hogberg and Wylie in AHL this season) and Cam York, Attard, a bunch of others following behind. Due to Johnsons age/salary and contract length, I;m not sure Niskanen's UFA status and probable departure would mean Johnson moves up the depth chart at 6mil. So with little other movement, Johnson probably stays on 3rd pairing.

The cap being a year to year task, adding Johnson in 20-21 doesn't help, and with expansion coming and Philly probably protecting Myers, Sanheim and Provorov, they'd probably use their money on a 1 year UFA RD in 2020-21.

The player's value is pretty even, just not sure the need of each team of those players is even. Outside of any other moves, Philly currently has seven capable dmen, with only Braun likely to move, so without Philly moving Gotisbehere, the need for Johnson isn't that high. (Now if you offered Girard for JVR and a pick/prospect/etc... that might get interesting).

I actually was a proponent of the Avs signing JVR when he was FA. I was wrong then. Not because JVR isn’t a quality player, it’s that stylistically it’s a very poor fit. COL is the highest scoring team in the NHL off the rush and in transition. The premium by Avs management has been on skating and speed to play in transition, and this is arguably JVR’s weakest aspect. If the cap was 5-10M more and the roster sizes were bigger sure I’d love to have him as a spot specialist on PP and offensively critical draws because he is great in the slot and at the goal mouth, but there isn’t. And so I think Colorado says no to that deal.

I considered a trade for JVR a few weeks ago in the AGM linked below, where I proposed a trade involving Zadorov for JVR ($1.5m retained).
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1739128

In the process and aftermath of making that AGM I concluded that JVR just isn't a good fit. He may still be putting up points, but he just simply doesn't fit the style of this team given his lack of speed. I also don't think his contract is that attractive for what he brings. It might be worth it if Philadelphia retained some salary to make him worth the risk, but even then he's just not an ideal match for the fast transition game this team plays.

As for the idea of trading Johnson, I think we need a big and strong RHD to eat tough defensive minutes much more than we need another 2nd line forward. Not to mention that Johnson is one of the lockeroom leaders and moving him would unsettle the harmony of the team.

As such, it's a no from this Avs fan.
