Cirelli OS My take

Description
I don't think Guerin is the GM to make and OS offer to begin with. Fenton would have imo. I also don't see much reason, other than money, to leave TB.

But if an OS was made I think you go with less term, not more, and it'll be more likely to be signed by the player. Basically an expensive bridge deal however long the flatcap is projected to last.

The shorter term will give the player a chance at a raise sooner and more control over his future. The player needs to sign the OS for it to work, so make it as favorable to him as possible. If he wants the term to make his a UFA instead when the contract ends, give it to him.

Yes, this team is over the 23 man roster limit. It's basically to cover any underpays of the RFAs. The bottom of the roster will sort itself out via trade, waivers, or in camp.

OS are fun to make on here, but highly unlikely to happen in reality. I think a trade is much more likely to happen, but not between these two clubs.

Certainly an entirely valid point of view. Whichever one of us is right, I hope the Wild at least make the effort!

You forgot Soucy, too!

Soucy is a group 6 UFA. I'd like to have him back, but he can easily decide to go somewhere else for more money, playing time, etc.

That's a fair take. I guess it depends on the player. Some guys want to bet on themselves (like Fiala) and others want big paydays (not a great example, but Dumba sort of went that route).

I agree, though, they're fun in theory but rarely work. I do think that Tampa is in a really unique situation with $5M in cap and 15 players signed and a few high-end RFA's to extend, and that could make this more realistic, but Guerin probably isn't the guy to make it happen.

Coyle and Nino would be better examples of safe vs betting on themselves.

Exactly, I knew there were better examples but couldn't think of them off the top of my head.

By the way, this team is well set up not only for the coming season but in the future; aside from other considerations, the expansion draft roster of Parise, Greenway, Cirelli, Eriksson Ek, Fiala, Zuccarello, Kunin (Kaprizov is exempt), Suter, Dumba and Spurgeon plus whichever young goalie wins out is bullet-proof and a very nice core to build on with Matthew Boldy and this year's 14th overall pick.

They do have a much better base for a team than many realize. They need another future top-6 center (JEE really came into his own this year) and a future goalie (which they might have in their prospect pool).

Fenton took a lot of heat, but he set the team up very well in his short time here. Moving on the the 2010 draft class was what the team really needed to do. The Zucc signing was a bad move and he gambled and lost on the Rask/Nino trade.

Can't argue with your take on the OS rarely working, but worth a try. Also you are right Fenton would have likely been a more successful offer sheet GM.

From my perspective wabit is always well thought out in his team analysis, more pessimistic than most Wild fans, but thinks through the roster very well.

I think your logic is sound, but I think it would take more for Cirelli to sign it with the Wild. Not to pick on Minnesota, but he could take a deal with TBL for less, net about the same, not have to change a thing, and honestly if you are a young millionaire athlete where would you rather live.

Montana actually. With a big plot of land I can sit on my porch and enjoy looking at.

TB would have to offer like $5m to match the $6.3m for the net return. Everyone is different for what they want, or where they want to live. I don't know the guy personally so I couldn't say anything about what he wants from life. Maybe the guy has a thing for hot dishes, fishing and playing pond hockey? Then again he could also have a chicken in Ybor that he can't bear to leave?
