Checks the facts. San Jose had a worse GAA than the Leafs despite spending (wasting) so much cap on overpriced declining Dmen. Even Jones is paid more than Andersen.
Leaf had there two best Dman or LTIR, and their two worse Dman last year are UFAs and won't be retired.
So if your silly premise that the Leafs won't be contenders because of their defence.....San Jose defence won't even make them to the playoffs.

32.25m in four players Karlsson, Vladsic, Burns and Jones....3rd worse GAA in the league. Weren't in the playoffs at season close. And really with those disastrous NTCs, NMCs, not much hope to be better.

San Jose doesn't have a D problem, they have a Goalie problem and a coaching problem.

No San Jose they have personnel/cap/ problems. Unmovable aging high cap Dmen. At least the Leafs cleaned up lots of their Dmen problems by not having Barrie and Ceci next season, and getting rid of their coaching problem Babcock
