Couture to Buffalo - Helping eachother out - discussion

Description

My thought process-

Frolik and Bogo are no value/ whatever and Jones is the same, if I’m correct.

Jones needs a change of scenery and has proven in the past he can be a true NHL starter (and San Jose just isn’t working).

I chose cozens because 1 Casey M can stay 3C and Couture can be 2C and a beast in the playoffs. Buffalo gets their ever desired depth and a goalie who could play 50 games decently/ starter material if he bounces back even a tad. It’s a major change for both teams and a big/ sudden move. Slight gambles for both sides. San Jose loses a proven 1C on a 8 year contract who’s a beast, and buffalo loses a potential 1 or 2 C in cozens who’s young. San Jose loses their captain but buffalo takes on jones who if a change and trade doesn’t work for him and a new systems; then it hurts. I think it’s fair (Cozens and a 2nd for Couture with the potential of jones playing well thrown in). San Jose can properly rebuild, and Buffalo can give eichel a winning chance.

I’m open to discussion, if you think it shouldn’t be cozens or its 1 sided for either team let’s discuss.

As good as couture is, it’s still a bad contract. I think a better trade would be mittelstadt and a 1st for couture. SJS needs to rebuild. I would trade couture and then retain 1/2 on burns to maximize value.

Exactly. I quickly mentioned it but I kept mittel in Buffalo because he could develop well in a 3C role with less pressure in all situations since couture and eichel are now ahead of him and cozens being more fair for SJS

Which first tho because SJS would want this years but buffalo is obviously keeping that unles they are willing to gamble that (san jose would maybe allow first overall protection but if it’s like top 5 protection idk if SJS would be as eager, maybe top 3?)

Lol yeah they’re basically SJS of the east. Umm idk is SJS would want 2021 cause that draft isn’t going to be as deep (as far as we know now maybe it will be i don’t know personally). because it’s their captain and they want to start the rebuild this year, 2021 / near expansion leaves a yea/ season of limbo

heres my thoughts, buffalo gunna start selling themselves real soon, with bogosian AND frolik as UFAs thats 10m additional cap they gain. they are multiple pieces away from contention not just a couture and a crappy jones. I dont see buffalo and sjs as trade partners.

honest question, can you free fall if you were never high enough to fall to begin with? like yea buffalo started hot but theyve been out of the playoffs since mid november lol.

I'm not saying couture is bad, nor am i saying that his playoff performances aren't impressive, but he's 30 on a really bad contract. Cozens is much younger and the sabres would be foolish to deal him for couture, in addition to taking on that awful contract of Jones.

Fair trade IMO but I dont think Buff should sell their future for a win now guy. Realistically even with this change we might still be 2 years away from being a contender. So now we are left with a decaying Couture instead of an upswing in Cozens. The timetable does not fit the mold of what Buf needs to do.

I think the Sabres could use jones. He's an upgrade on Hutton. Couture at 8 million, at that salary and term, they probably don't want... I don't think any team takes him on without 50% retention. Sabes trading cozens is a bad idea in any case, but for this is awful.
