Casey DeSmith finds his passport

Description
Leaf clear cap space, get a first round pick, and a backup goalie that was a .916 goalie last year in 36 games.

DeSmith is signed for for another two seasons at 1.2 million. This is likely less than what Georgiev will be getting this summer as an RFA.

Leafs are loaded at LW. Penguins really need one. Instead of a rental, they get an affordable young forward that would fit their style of play.

20 goals and 23 assists last season in 73 games. 25-years-old. $3,400,000 for another three seasons. Skilled speedy winger. Fits exactly what the Penguins do with Sullivan. Throw him on Crosby's wing for the rest of the season. For a late first? That's what you would hope to get in the draft. But you would have to wait several years for them to develop.

Compare that to giving up a first for Kreider as a rental for one season.

Make that Kapanen and then you might have something. I find the real issue is what the Pens want to do going forward at the goalie position. I couldn't imagine them signing Murray to his much deserved bigger contract when they have Terry and DeSmith as cheaper quality options. I'm buying the Murray trade hype around the draft and keeping the other 2 since its been beyond important to have 2 guys that can win games consistently. There's a good reason why they've kept all 3.

The need for the Penguins is a LW though. And Toronto has more of those to spare that RW. Johnsson and Kapanen's production last year was basically identical.

He actually did pretty good for the 20 games with us this year. no mistakes and is a good 7th D. Leafs are in trouble with injury and playing Marincin, that guy is terrible D.

I have never seen anything more over valued than backup goalies on CapFriendly.

Totally agree, I said that a couple weeks ago on this site, most backup goalies go for a 5th round pick.

Just thought he would be a good option for the leafs, can pick him up for nothing, use him until players are healthy and send him down where they can pay him 1 million

Why would the need be at LW? Even without Guentzel, the pens have Kahun locked in with Geno and Rust while McCann can play with Crosby and whoever they decide to put on his rw. ZAR is locked in with Blueger and Tanev. Galchenyuk will either play RW on that first line or be on the 3rd line with Bjugstad and Horny with Simon playing 1st line RW.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d be all for Mango, but it’s not a desperate need that they need to give up a 1st for him. Especially when since Jake comes back there is a possibility he drops to the 3rd line. I’d do a 3rd and DeSmith for Mango w/o a pick coming back.

McCann is better at center. Bjugstad is better on the wing. Florida figured this out after a while and this is how they used them. Galchenyuk is a LW and hasn't worked on any line. He needs to be replaced. Guentzel is injured and needs a replacement.

Ok put Bjugstad on Crosbys RW and Simon on his left in Guentel’s absence and put McCann as 3C.
Chucky plays better on the right side...at least offensively. Why wouldn’t you at least try putting him on the right side on the top line with 2 defensively responsible players in Crosby and Simon?

If you don’t like jugs on Crosbys wing, Lafferty is still an option. However pens lines were...
McCann-Crosby-Simon
Kahun-Malkin-Rust
Galchenyuk-Aggozzino-Hornqvist
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

So I’d suffice to say they will put McCann there to start.
And btw, I’m not disagreeing with a trade for Mango. All I’m saying is that they aren’t desperate enough to need to give up a 1st. Like I said, mango for DeSmith and a 3rd is reasonable. The 3rd coming back to Pittsburgh is unnecessary if we can get mango cheaper without getting the puck back. The team has been killing it and we just got Crosby back, we will have Jugs back soon too. A 1st is a steep price for a player who is going to be on the 3rd line at best come playoff time.
