Pierre LeBrun may be onto something here

Description
LeBrun...
"To me, my own opinion, the most logical contract for Marner which both sides could live with: 6 x $10.5 AAV."

Still not enough left over cap space IMO. Players will be returning from LTIR and there will be other injuries. Tight, tight, tight.

Yeah I think if they agree to something it will be 6 years. But AAV will be higher. 11 to 11.5 tho. As they said yesterday, Marner doesn't want less AAV than Matthews with more term

I really don’t think so, AA and Anderson didn’t get their ask either. Marner has absolutely no leverage. Even the fans and media are turning on him now.

Had a tweet this morning saying some progress has been made. Seems too early for Ferris to start crumbling. Not sure if that’s good news or not...

Edit* the tweet was from cj not Lebrun.

This team will be really good, but their 4th line and 3rd pair D are going to get filled in. They should be able to score their way out of most situations at least. Thats a reasonable deal for Marner

IMO, that 7 year x 11M deal is what will probably be the winning number. He'll come to his senses soon enough. The Leafs will not want any other scenario that Marner will want. If its 3 year bridge, Marner will want 10M but the leafs won't do that. If its 5 year, he'll want 11M but the Leafs won't do that.

11M over 7 years is a silly amount that he'll eventually realize he should have accepted back in June. I think they just wanted to see if the could bring it higher and sort of called Dubas's bluff. They weren't bluffing and I think the Marner camp will realize that when the season draws closer.

The number is never going to be higher than 10.5. If he could have got it, he would have signed it!
700k in cap is just fine.
All summer it's been the same story. 10.5 to 10.
It's the only number that makes sense.
Marner is PO because he's sick of playing second fiddle.
The honest best decision is for him to find his own team. Period.
He doesn't want to be the second wheel to Mathews who got more. He doesn't want to be the 3rd wheel to JT who got more.
TML kind of put themselves in that spot. Right or wrong.

Truth is there are deeper systemic things going on here. It is probably why they haven't named a captain yet. They don't want the drama of that. Clearly Marner thinks he's the best player on the team.
I don't agree with that, but that's whats in his head.

I think if that happens the leafs will need to move Hyman... which really sucks.

Depending on the timing of his return from LTIR and when they finally make a trade for Marner, maybe they can get by with both no?

It's way too much. He turned down a deal that would make him the second highest paid winger of all time. He's simply not being reasonable.

He's not being abused nor treated unfairly. He was offered a blockbuster deal that destroyed previous benchmarks. If he won't take that he has to sit until he sees more peers sign at great deals but not in the stratosphere he wants and then come to terms with a still incredible 9-10 million for term
