Description
Trading Kuzy. Probably won't ever happen, but you never know. This fixes the cap and gives the Caps a bit of breathing room with a 23 man roster.

Edited: Since the trade was "terrible", Vancouver adds a 3rd round draft pick.

Okay, so then Vancouver adds. Kuzy may be dominant when on his game, but that was only about...what, half the games last year? He was kind of bad for long stretches of the year. And one of the worst defensively. I agree he was lights out in the 24 game playoff run for the Cup, but why ignore his extremely inconsistent play this past season? Oh and...cocaine.

Horvat is also trending up, Kuzy is not trending up. He's actually trending down. Let's hope that's just a fluke though. Horvat is ranking the #37C, Kuzy the #31C. The trade isn't "terrible".

Whose ranking these Centers.. are you on daily faceoff lol??

and he was inconsistent last year, but come playoffs he was back to normal.. and tbh i could care less how kuzy is in the reg season, cause that season does not matter.

But yes the trade is terrible

He wasn't "back to normal" in the playoffs. He was just as inconsistent.

I disagree its "terrible", but I added a third. It seems you're willing to ignore how bad Kuzy was at times last year, that's your prerogative.

Interesting idea, although I don't think Vancouver does it. Vancouver will need the cap space down the road to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes, especially with the way the market is trending. Horvat will also probably be their captain in the next year or two. This is my personal opinion, but I also think Horvat is the better player.

I was looking at the Vancouver roster and Horvat being named C did cross my mind, and I would expect they value him sentimentally too, as he was one of their high up 1st rounders and came through their system. To me the trade seems fairly even, both players have their pluses and minuses. It depends on what the Caps want to replace Kuzy with, a better 2 way more consistent forward like Bo or keep the roller coaster ride that Kuzy has been the last year?

The Metro is getting tighter and tighter with both the Rangers and Devils improving quite a bit this off-season. The Caps were only 6 points from missing the playoffs entirely, you can't afford to "not care" about the regular season, or you'll find yourself out of the playoffs.

Well.... technically New Jersey's first rounder, that cost them all of Cory Schneider. If they're valuing him based on the pain and suffering of not having to pay Schneider $5M this year, then consolidating their gains into a down on his luck #1 center is going to feel like a HUGE win. smile

Horvat just made a huge leap forward with a 61 point season. Kuznetsov's "inconsistent season" left him with his third-highest total, of "just" 72. Horvat is two and a half years younger, with three fewer 70 point seasons (zero) and one fewer eighty point season (zero). Unless he's already the captain, the coach's nephew, and general manager's BFF, Vancouver is happy to add a 2nd.

As for who is defensively better, Kuznetsov has gotten Selke votes in two different seasons, and Horvat hasn't. Horvat has the better single season shot blocking total, but it's, like, 63. Kuznetsov has the better single season hits mark, but it's only 73. Horvat averaged a bit more penalty killing last year, but only at 0:29 a night. These guys play offense. And they're both pretty good at it.

I think Washington could consider this, based on age and cap hit. But if Kuznetsov plays like he's capable of on the second line, and Pettersson keeps improving at 1C, Vancouver is gonna be insanely good. Just ridiculous.

Good points there. I'm with your assessment. I think the trade tips towards Vancouver, but that's assuming Kuzy plays closer to his potential. With the latest news, and his previous season, that's not gauranteed.

I did see Kuzy was voted for the Selke a couple of times, which is shocking considering just how bad he was defensively this past season. Why did he regress so severely in this area of his game? (*Snort* coke *snort*) Surely most every forward was better than Kuzy defensively this past season, including Horvat.

I do think that Vancouver should add a draft pick, and initially when I did this, it had a third in it, but removed it when first submitting. I would think the Caps would want them to add a second and they'd surely ask for that initially and see if Vancouver says yes.

Thanks. Yeah, I don't know that the Caps really sweat the value, if they're more worried about having someone who's definitely healthy to start the season. Just emphasizing at a 70-83 point center going through hard times is still at least as valuable as a 50-60 point center, who might be improving, or might be due for a little regression to his personal average performance, with another 50 point year coming up.

I mean.... ideally, there's a side deal of Djoos for Stecher, but whether that balances out depends on how each team views addiction. I know the Caps in the past did a great job of selling a second chance for a guy in a similar situation in Mike Richards. This is probably a little tougher on the PR squad, but it's Kuznetsov. He's good at hockey, sure, but he's also usually a down-to-Earth, sensitive guy. His biggest scandal before this was that he let his daughter talk him into doing a Philadelphia Eagles touchdown celebration, and Don Cherry hadn't heard of it.

Edit: I built Djoos for Stecher from Vancouver's side and it almost makes sense, if you expect Djoos to keep improving at the same rate, and play even better when paired with a talented fellow-Swede like Edler. https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1403310
