Tatar has already been traded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks during a very bad season. Tatar has also been traded for Pacioretty, multiple times 30 goals scorer, also after this bad ywar. He just had an amazing season and nobody will make a favor to Nashville, but they need to get better on the top6, so this makes sense. Petry is a big and speed dman who just got 42 and 46 points in his last 2 seasons. The last trades involving this kind of dman (Barrie, Subban, Braun, Trouba, Fox, Muzzin, etc.) all suggest this kind of return for Petry. Now, if MTL needs to add something, like a 4th or 3rd round pick to make it happen, it's ok. Or even if it's only a 1st, it's ok. Under this, they should not Trade Petry.

I agree with you on Domi's salary. I think 8,25M a year should be ok.

T....hey should not Trade Petry.

True. They should trade Alzner, though, even if they have to retain a bunch. Alzner at 2.5M, a solid defensive defenseman, with two fairly recent twenty point seasons? He'll get some kind of return. Not much, but something.

Lol. The art of quoting.

I would like Alzner to have any kind of return, but he has negative value, even at 2.5. I prefer continue paying him than having to give a 2nd to make him go.

It cost a 2nd or so to unload Brooks Orpik, a similar stay at home defenseman at a higher cap hit, when he was 38. Alzner is about to turn 30. In hockey years, they're a generation apart. I'm surprised he didn't wind up in Dallas last year.

We'll see what he does this season, but last season Domi had 72 points.

I don't understand why a team that trying to make the playoffs...they were two points out of the playoffs last season would trade two important parts of their team for futures. Not the message you want to send to your fans and other players. Vacant cap space and picks that may or not be NHLer three years from now isn't what team do.

I hope you're right. But nowadays, teams are rich and want to spend most of what the cap allows. There are already 16 teams that have less than 4.5M left on cap (Alzner salary), and we should add Jets (Connor and Laine), Flyers (Provorov and Konecny), Lightning (Point), Flames (Tkachuk) and Bruins (McAvoy and Carlo), plus the team that will sign Gardiner. All those teams cannot have Alzner due to his salary.

Due to poor performances and good drafting in the last 5 years, MTL and Bergevin are in a very good cap position for a couple of years, like Carolina and Colorado.

I like your attitude. Maybe you're right and they should keep those players. I just think Suzuki and Brook will soon be ready to take Tatar and Petry spots. And in a couple of years, when Suzuki and Brook will get better salaries, we'll need good cheap rookies to help on cap.

I think you're right that Alzner's salary is too high for a #4 defenseman. The math problem is the amount of retention that ends up cheaper than a buyout. The bigger issue is that retention ends sooner, so depending how slowly Suzuki and Evans develop, maybe it's better to get it all over with at half price, rather than to drag it out forever at slightly less than half price.

And of course what I massively don't understand is how a 25 year old who breaks out for 17 points after never getting ten is now signed to almost half of the cap hit of a 30 year old with multiple 20 point seasons rotting in the minors. If you can't trade Alzner, play him with Weber or Petry, to get him back up to 20 points a year, and trade Kulak. Kulak's got a low cap hit and some GMs might see him as "trending up" rather than as "due for a regression to the mean." Give either of them just ten points next year, and I'd rather have the one who blocks shots and eats minutes.

A half retained Alzner is Hickey and he isn't moving either, theres just so few teams with any cap space.
To move him with retention will still cost assets unless he's swapped for another cap dump like the Neal/Lucic swap.

one season doesn't equal a career

William Karlsson had 43 G-78 pts the season before, tell me how much did he had the last one?

More than double his career high from before his breakout. I very much doubt Domi more than doubles his previous high from before last season of 52pts but it's nice to make bold predictions.
Assuming you meant he regressed from his new career high, he was still closer to that than his old one, about 9.2% of the average of the 2, which would put Domi, assuming we are doing a direct comparison, at around the 67-68 point mark.
Personally I think he settles around the 60 point mark, maybe hits 65 a few times, possibly even pushes 70 again before the end of his career.

Well, I think trading Alzner for a forward could make sense. I agree it's tough in the summer when everyone on every team is super-healthy, but injuries add up pretty quickly, for some teams, each year. Someone's going to end up with 14 forwards and three defensemen, and think that makes sense.

Yeah I'll agree with you there, if there's teams that are decimated by injuries and are trying to save their season/make the playoffs then maybe a retained Alzner makes some sense for some teams.
