They traded away relatively young player with high potential. I understand they wanted Coyle for their playoff run, but they will regret it next year (if Donato gets enough ice-time in MIN).

They didn't give up on him lol. Boston was one of the top teams in the league last year, but Donato wasn't going to be a factor for them. They had a chance to acquire a player that would fill a giant void (and he did). You gotta give to get and that's what Boston did. Best of luck to Donato, he's a really great kid. Boston fans are happy with Coyle and Minny fans are happy with Donato, sounds like win/win deal to me.

Did you not watch the Cup Playoffs? Without Coyle .. and Johannnsen.. not sure Bruins get past Toronto in 1st round. .. plus Coyle is bigger and more skills .. a hometown boy with contract term? .. this trade is what got Sweeney GM of year.

Donato .. while talented .. lacks certain personal characteristics to excel in NHL .. a kid of priviledge who has always been Boston protected and developed prima Donna mindset.. he and Cassidy were oil and water .. I think he better off in WESTERN conference where teams not as tough and little bit more scoring ice for him

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think he has as much potential as you. He will be a good NHL Scorer. Kind of reminds me of Vatrano. Elite shot, but not very strong on the puck and not particularly fast. With the right guys around he will put up decent numbers. I see both Donato and Coyle coming in 45-60pts for the next few years.

The Bruins also have some depth at young winger and needed Center help. I think the Bruins may have found their 2c - Krejci replacement moving forward at least until Frederic, Beecher, Studnicka are ready, then he slot back down to 3c presumably at reasonable dollars 4x5

You also said, "If" he gets enough ice-time in reference to Donato. If he was such a sure thing, I don't think this would be a question. It was a good deal for both teams.

Predictions:
Coyle: 23g 32a
Donato 27g 21a

Lol. Boston traded a left shot left wing which they have plenty of for right shot C/RW that they desperately needed. Coyle was a beast in the playoffs. He is a much better fit and bigger need than Donato was. Boston fans hope Donato has a long and fantastic career. Will be no regrets. We got what we needed. Thanks.

They probably "gave up" on Blake Wheeler too early as well, but it also probably got em the cup. That's how these things go. Generally, clubs hold on to prospects, especially first round picks, way too long for my taste. Just because someone turns out to be a good player doesn't make it wrong to give them up at one point in time. Every 5th or 6th rounder has a chance of being the next Klingberg or Stone, so teams should never give up on those players if they followed your methodology. But you can't work like that, you have to think in terms of probabilities. Boston deemed it more probable to win a cup thanks to Coyle's contribution in the next two years than with Donato for however long they can keep him, and I agree with that decision

I think MIN fans are also overrating the guy based on a few good games right after he got traded. He had six primary points in 22 games (with another two on the PP), he has a good shot but is a third liner (with second line ceiling). Boston is in win now mode and got a good 2/3C with term.

Wheeler was also a much better/more established player when he was traded. We think Donato ends up there but Wheeler was almost doubling Donato's production when he was traded.

Oh no, I agree with all of this, my point was basically that you can't judge a players current value based on his ceiling. Wheeler turned out amazingly for the Jets, Boston won a cup, win-win. Even if Donato turns out great, Boston played their probabilities and window correctly, at least in my mind
