Bad Contract Swap with OTT

Description
Saw this idea floated around on the Web and it actually doesn't seem like a bad idea looking into it... interested in what Isles and/or Sens fans thought

Rationale:

Ladd and Ryan are both bad contracts, so this is following the Lucic for Neal type of deal. Ladd could potentially be an IR candidate for Ladd, so they might not even need to play him.

Plus, his deal is heavy with Signing Bonuses, which means if the trade were to happen now Ladd would only be owed 13m over the next 4 years (signing bonus for 19-20 has already been paid).

While Ryan would be owed 20.5m over the next 3 years, meaning OTT would save 7.5m in actual dollars and 1.75m per on the CAP.

I did the trade as a straight 1 for 1, since Ryan has a higher annual AAV but Ladd has an additional year. Additional conditional picks can be added to sweeten the pot, one way or the other, if need be.

The idea being that Ryan, playing on the 2nd line with Bailey and Nelson might actually be able to regain his 40-50 point days (he had 42pts last season), while Ladd could save OTT money and also provide veteran leadership on the 3rd line, if healthy, or he can simply be a contract they use to help them stay above the CAP floor going forward on the IR, or LTIR

Lastly, Ryan's deal is more buyout friendly than Ladds, so if the deal doesn't work out, Ryan can be bought out with almost a 3.8m savings per year.

Not a bad idea for either team. Sens would maybe want a high pick back to appease the fans and signal it as a rebuilding move not just a cheap move.

1- Ottawa will want a pick of some kind as Ladd's contract is longer.
2- Montreal has only 4.4 mill in cap space.
3- Montreal will never give up that much for Leddy. Maybe 1 #1 or 2 2nd rounders.

That's fair. The idea I saw had the Sens retaining 2.25m and the Isles sending a 2nd round pick, I just removed those two parts... as it stands, I can see the Isles throwing in a 3rd pick, so Ladd and a 3rd for Ryan (no retention).

Serious question, am I missing something? How in the world is Nick Leddy worth that much? I hear a lot of Islander fans saying how good he is, but they are also the same guys always trading him.

I would sign up for the Ryan trade. I do think we would have to add a mid round pick or prospect, but it's close

Nick Leddy is good, he's been our #1 defenseman for a few years now. The reason Isles fans are moving Leddy isn't because he sucks or we don't' want him here, it's because we have younger, cheaper versions of him ready to take over (Toews and Aho), so Leddy is our most valuable asset to trade and get something of value for him. Most Isles fans would tell you they'd rather keep Leddy, but in a CAP world when you have younger versions of players ready to step in, you trade the older guy while you still can.

I'd add a 3rd if need be. I like this because it technically opens up a roster spot, and I'd love to see Ryan find his game again. When he's on, he's ON.

Could this be a bigger move with Pageau? Isles really need a 3C on an expiring contract. He'd be perfect here. Like Pageau and Ryan for Ladd, B prospect like Quenneville, and a 3rd?

I'm firmly in the camp that unless Ottawa can get out from Bobby's deal without taking a big contract back (would need to retain obviously), the sens should just ride out the rest of Bobby's deal.

The Sens will lose any swap of Bad contracts because Bobby Ryan is a much better player than any of those players on bad contracts. If it were up to me, I'd make Bobby Ryan Captain.

Yup, this is exactly it. And I understand the skepticism coming from outside fans, but we all love Leddy. He just holds value from a position of strength.

A 3rd round pick can be added to the trade to offset the year extra on Ladd
Montreal currently has 25 players on their roster, they can easily clear out 1.5m just by sending guys to the minors, which they are gonna have to do anyway.
Leddy is worth more than just a 1st, maybe a 1st and a 3rd is the lowest I'd go on Leddy, but it also doesn't have to be Montreal, could be any team needing a Top 4 LHD. I just used Montreal because they've been the most rumored to Leddy.

I would say you're probably right, but for a rebuilding team having someone like Ryan on the roster eating up a Roster spot that could go a younger play isn't ideal. Ladd could be a guy who goes on IR and never comes off, meaning you get the CAP hit, actually dollars relief, an additional pick (3rd round) AND an open roster spot for a younger guy.

I wouldnt do Ryan for Ladd as a Sens fan. Ryan is still a serviceable 3rd liner on a contending team, can still play middle 6. I personally dont think Ladd can still play, if theres a chance he might be a longterm LTIR and retire or something id consider this

If Ladd does go on IR, I'd be more open to it, but I'm not convinced Ladd is done yet. Until I see Ladd on IR, I would be hesitant. Don't want to do this deal and end up having to play Andrew Ladd for the next 4 years.

Also Bobby Ryan isn't really "eating up a roster spot" in my opinion. Assuming he's put the hand injuries behind him, he's still an effective middle six Winger, and its 1 to have him where he is than to let the young players completely run the show.

...and a possible veteran leader who knows a thing or two about being on bad to good to Stanley Cup contending squads. I think, if there was a deal to be made, it would go something like what you've described. Ryan has been such a good soldier for so long in Ottawa that I just want to watch him succeed wherever he goes. He'd have great success on a 2nd/3rd line in NYI.
